that's a great question that I can't answer.
The amp I listened to made a speaker pop violently
with a distorted hissing sound. It was pretty evil.

The amp looks good and powered up ok - just curious what
might cause something like that b/c I would like to know if it
might be worth repairing?

Plug a sub into a wall socket you will hear what pure electricity sounds like My buddy did it to a couple of blue thunder's years ago.

Connect a sub across the 12V output of your car battery and what will it sound like? You get a instant pop, then nothing at all until the coil fries. This is still pure electricity.

If the speaker is popping violently and also making a hissing sound, that does not sound like anything which could be described as "pure".

Does the amp go in and out of protect mode while this is happening?

In the case of the wall outlet, that all depends on the sub. We plugged a Rockford Team RF woofer into a wall outlet and it sounded great. And was louder than just about anything I ever heard. 60Hz at 120V on a sub which can easily handle it is some serious bass output.

In regards to the pure sound of electricity, I stand corrected. The amp was in constant protect mode -the red light stayed on the whole time and when the power supply was shut down, amps stayed on until rca cables were removed (~20 seconds or so). Turning off the volume stopped the popping and electrical-type sounds. any ideas?
