Question about caps and power wiring

Post by fuzzysnuggleduck »

I'm looking to replace the caps in my M44. I want to avoid any leaking cap damage and extend the life of the amp as it's now my baby. I want to own this thing for a long time still.

So, what caps do I get? I keep reading things about how modern caps have more capacitance in the same size as ones from the M series era. Is this true? If so, should I get higher rated caps?

A pointer in the right direction would be great.

Next, I want to upgrade my power wiring some time soon in slow anticipation of adding an M100 to the 4Runner. I was thinking 1/0 would be fine with two distribution blocks, one power, one ground then doing maybe 4 gauge to the amps. I'm currently grounding to the frame but the whole reason for changing the wiring is to add power capacity for when I get an M100 (who knows when?) and if I'm going to do that, I might as well ensure I the best ground point I can: the battery.

The final goal would be and M100 with either an RSd12 or Tom's IDMax12. I love the Xmax but I'm getting a bit of a itch for low end extension and hearing the IDMax powered from the M44 gave me a really big smile. Of course, all of this is in the future, but I got to start thinking about the "infrastructure" because it takes time to get installed and I don't want to drop a lot of cash at once on this. Sorta take it step-by-step.

Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm sure you gurus will have some interesting things to say from which I can learn.

i think it would be easier at this point for you to just run a second dedicated 4 gauge for your would be m100.

that would save you quite a bit

I knew this existed but I didn't realize you packaged all the info I needed (including cap model) in the document.

Great work with the tutorial!

That is true. Definitely keeping that option open.

Any capacitor recommendations for upgrading the rails as well?

I would leave the rails as is, assuming they are not beat up at all.
