My little R/C project

I purchased a nice RTR HPI E-Savage with the funds i raised selling my HPI Savage SS4.6 Nitro car. It´s much more fun driving where i live because people started moaning the 4.6 being way to loud.

It came with dual brushed motors and and two 3000mAh NiMh HPI batteries.(First picture) I drove it a couple of times and started to upgrade it a few days ago.

I converted it to a single brushless Mamba Monster 2650kV motor with matching ESC. Did a couple of test runs with the Nimh´s and decided to go the LiPo way. At this point the weak links started to fail. the 66tooth spur gear melted away because the slipper clutch overheated during wheely fun (Second picture) I replaced the spur gear and went back to the NiMh´s and drove it a little more. For sure it got airborn a couple of times when going over a 4 meter high pile of snow and one of my front suspension arms broke when it hit a rock.(Third picture)

I now the decided to go the let´s tune the hell out of it way, since i got the E-Savage for 125bucks brandnew.
Today i ordered a few parts like the lower and upper aluminum suspension arms, aluminum skid plates, heavy duty differentials, metal spur gears with 66 and 70 tooth, aluminum shocks, better an bigger tires, aluminum center shafts and last but not least the metal pinions for the center gear box.

The fourth picture is what i´ll start with. It already has the bigger tires on it.

I have a slash 4x4 that I like to tear up the snow in. I got out my paddle tires a few weeks ago and been enjoying them since. Lipo is definitly the way to go now, I don't think I could imagine dealing with gas anymore and with the power out of them and price of batteries now no way....

My 2WD Slash is a lot of fun but I barely drive it now. The NiCDs I buy seem to expire after only 15-20 drives, and I get shit performance and battery life when they do. I've tried many different brands... have a really expensive charger too! Should have gone LiPo but that means swapping ESC and motor too. $$$ hobby, among all my other $$$ hobbies, so it has kinda taken a back seat now.

shit the lipos are wher all the fun is! When I swap in the high speed gear on mine it must be getting close to 60 if I can keep it straight. If the front end just catches a little air it can take off like it has wings. Thankfully the charger I used when I was flying rc was lipo ready so that was easy to swap over.

we have a big enough yard that I would love to do a small dirt track in the corner of it. There is a track not too far away but I just like to do it on my own really.

Yeah this was awesome we had a transponder setup too so when we had races up to 10 cars could keep track of times and count laps. It was a pretty awesome track,now it's just a bunch of hillls full of weeds though quite a shame really when you think of all the work we did to build it and the money we spent.

Well, this thread made me take out my Slash again last night! Turns out the battery I still had in it was a-ok to use even after sitting for about 4 months.

we got a light dusting last night, just enough to make it fun with paddles. If you do not have a set I highly recomend getting some, nothin like pulling wheelies in snow! PArts can break a little easier with everything being so cold but there is no fear of overheating....

That´s true ttocs! I ordered parts worth 300USD already

I just took the front end differential and the front drive shafts out and converted it to a RWD Savage. I also got the spur gear with slipper clutch from gcmachine today and it´s in the car already. I took me 1 second of full throttle to break one of the drive shafts when i tested it.
This thing does wheelies all day long now. I´m still waiting on the shocks the heavy duty cup joints and the heavy duty dog bones to get rid of the plastic shafts. More to come...

looks like fun for sure! We got 3" of snow last night and it should stick for another day or two. It is just enough that with paddles its almost more fun then on dry road/ground.

Reading this is so funny.. Sounds like me 5 grand ago.. I have both electric and gas... I have upgraded every part.. My problem is everytime I use any of my RC cars they break.. I've broke almost every part... I turned one into the grave digger... I don't have time for mine anymore... They just sit.. After reading this I think I'm going to get mine fixed and break it again...

I have been really happy with the slash. Had it for a year and only broke 3 parts on it, and they were all my fault so its all good

Nice Backyard you got there! The US-Car Season is almost over for this year over here in austria and i´ll start having fun with an 1/5 Scale Savage then.

I have been out of rc for the last few years but looks like I may be running onraoad again this winter, I was in the top 10 racers in canada and I am sure would have gone further but life and bills got in the way , racing as I am sure you know is not cheap..

I have had over 500 rc cars and that number came from buying and selling stuff on ebay along with a horrible addiction to just buying anything good rc when I saw it.. I once bought out an entire hobby shop when the guy mentioned he was getting out of the business, my friend and I drove 6 hours to a little town and pretty much loaded the van from front to rear with this guys entire store, we sold on ebay to guys all over the world, vintage tamiya stuff when the Can dollar was crap paid for alot of fun stuff!! sell a NIB brusier that was found at a yard sale bought for $50 sold for $1200 US then converted to almost $2000 Can!!

Anyway I am now running a brushless Traxxas rustler and a Tamiya race only mini, still have a wack of older stuff that is just not worth selling for what it means to me.

I think I am going to go charge up a pack..

I have a slash 4x4 but I hav not ran it since we had snow, still has the paddles on it. Its amazing what they have done with brushless motors in the past few years....
