box for two RSDC 12s
box for two RSDC 12s
I have to lightly used RSDC 12'' D4's on the way. And I need to get a box for them. I plan to seal them up. And from the research I have done, it seems these do best in the range of 1.0-1.25cubes, but more so on the higher 1.25 side. The only thing I am unsure about is does this take into account displacement? Should I be buying a box that is 1.25 cubes per chamber, or a box that is 1.38 cubes per chamber that will become 1.25 with the subs 0.13 displacement?
Im thinking about getting this box.

It is 1.35 cubes per chamber, but will become 1.22 with the sub installed. Will this be fine?

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
you are correct that you want to subtract the displacement of the sub from the enclosure to try and match the optimum range. 1.35 should be pretty close
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.
Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Actually, 1.25 is already accounting for driver displacement.
Re: box for two RSDC 12s
So I should get a box that is 1.25 cubes? And then the sub displacement will bring it down to 1.12cubes?
Which one is it?
Think the sonic box will be adequate in terms of internal volume?

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Damn. Guess I need to look for a different box then. I would build one. But I want a slanted back. And I dont have the know how or tools to do that.
Re: box for two RSDC 12s
You can always reduce a larger box by adding 2x4's inside of it as bracingtimaishu wrote:Damn. Guess I need to look for a different box then. I would build one. But I want a slanted back. And I dont have the know how or tools to do that.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Dont make the mistake i made, i bought the perfect box from sonic, but the rsdc 12's arnt really 12's. The holes were too big. Check the specs.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Would I just glue the bracings in? How would I know how many I need till its the right volume.
And I looked in sonic and it says the cut out diameter is 11 inches.
According to this.
http://download.phoenixphorum.com/Manua ... manual.pdf
It says the bolt circle is 11.61 inches.
I see what you mean though where it says 10.75. That looks like its showing the size of the woofer and not the cut out?
Help?

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
measuring from the center of 1 bolt hole across the sub to the center of another bolt hole is 11.61 inches. The hole size you need to cut out is 10.75 inches for a perfect subwoofer fit, mounting and seal. If it is 11 inches the sub will not mount correctly leaving gaps and not much material for the screws or bolts with t-nuts to grab hold of.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Well shit. Guess Ill look around locally. Doubt Ill find one as cheap as that sonic.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
So I looked locally. Didnt find much. Got some quotes for customs ranging in the hundreds.
So even though its only .25 inches more, its not a good idea?

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
I wouldn't want an 1/8th of an inch gap around my subwoofer when mounted with the screws barely grabbing.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Why dont you just do the logical thing and buy this box.
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_760 ... -GRAY.html'
Ream the holes a touch larger and put 12s in there. Now if the sub runs small anyway its less reaming you have to do and is probably real close already. I have the exact box but rectangular and there is more than enough room to fit a 12 in my box. I actually bought the box with that in mind if I didnt like the performance of the 10s I bought I could throw 12s in the same box. My 10s needed a lot of airspace for the larger box recommendations. They are a nice box for the money for sure. I resealed my whole box because they look like they just slap some sealer on it and I wanted to be sure and for 5 bucks and a caulk gun you are set. I have the darker Grey in my car and the color match was perfect for a Ford carpet.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Wow. Good idea. My brother in law has a jig saw I could use.
I may go this route. And stick some scrap wood in their to eat up space.
I may wait a few days though. I may be able to get a prefab from a stereo shop that is 1.25 cubes already. Though I dont know what the cut out diameter will be.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
So, using the logic that there wouldn't be enough material on the box with 11" holes to mount the sub, how is it possible to mount a sub with a little larger basket? Come on people, its the same amount of mounting material, the subs all have the same bolt circle-- within a few millimeters anyhow for the same "size" sub.
Agreed that you would be best to have the tightest fitting cut out, but an eighth inch gap around the sub is nothing, someone inexperienced is probably going to do a worse job enlarging a smaller opening, that is easier said than done.
I had my o/s cv strokers in my box I built originally, they were a conventional sized cut out, probably 11 or a little bit bigger, once I got a third rsdc, I dropped those in the place of the strokers, the subs mounted fine, including the threaded inserts lining up with the bolt circle.
Later,
Jason

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
I agree do not use a jigsaw but use a file or sander if you are going with the 10 inch box. I think you are over thinking it I would not add any wood for POINT ONE cu ft of airspace. Do you think PG tested a sub in a 1.3 or 1.35 box and said no it sounds like ass stop at 1.25? Get a tube or 2 of caulk and round all the inside corners off in the box that will eat some space.
Re: box for two RSDC 12s
Well shoot. Id like to thank you all for your help.
Though I am at a loss as to which I should buy.

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
I would get a proper sized box built or use the one for 10" subs and enlarge the hole but have someone experienced with woodworking do it. I have a box for RSDC 12"s and if it was 1/4 larger hole the screws would break through, not giving much to grab to. You could get away with it if you use t-nuts.
I would go to a cabinet maker give him the dimensions you need and he could probably build it in less than 30 minutes. I know when we needed a box quickly and didn't have time to build it we had a local cabinet guy do them and he charged us around $100 a box

Re: box for two RSDC 12s
So I decided Im just going to have a shop do it. Streetnoyz in San Diego.
Ive heard they are one of the best shops in SD. So I trust they will do it right for the price they quoted me at.
So you guys think 1.25 cubes BEFORE displacement is what I should go with? I still have time. I just need to find out my next day off so I can drop it off.
