Anyone run/hear a system in an electric car?

Post by capitolj80 »

In light of the ever ridiculous fuel prices, I was thinking that perhaps my next car would be an electric car. That got me to wondering how it works when someone wants to add a sound system to one of those. Is it easier or more difficult? Is the fact that the car has a massive power supply a great thing, or would the draw of an amp cripple it's efficiency? Anyone have any experience with this or at least wonder the same things I do?

It would eat directly into your range. Not that you couldn't have a good stereo by using highly efficient installation techniques... it would just be a bigger challenge.

That's what I was kinda thinkin/afraid of...kind of a bummer :( Could the addition of a dedicated battery for the audio be somewhat of a solution?

its a bit of a pain as usually the 12v battery is just used for aux circuits and uses a power supply to charge it
from the main hv battery (there is no alternator)
these power supply are only low current and the 12v aux battery is v small you can upgrade the battery to a larger one but its the size of the power supply that limits you

Without an alternator, it's most likely a fail.
screw car audio, I'd rather go fast....errr, wait a minute.

ahh..that's what I really didn't know was what kind of power supply or alternator an external battery would run off of...with out that, ya got nothin..

Best solution is obvious. Modify an amp to directly use the electric car's high voltage batteries :D
In the amps power supply use a step down regulator instead of step-up. Unlimited powa!

Of course the car manufacturer would strictly prohibit this kind of nonsense, because it's as safe as messing with nuclear bombs. But it could be done and it sure has tickled my brain before.

that's true, but like Stipud said, the amp's draw would eat right into the battery's range :(

it would be the same as trying to get better milage out of your top fuel dragster. Sure you can probably get it down to 3 gallons per mile if you work at it but it will be at the cost of performance, and your manhood.......

I dunno, a Prius might make me feel more manly than the 88hp 4-cylinder mustang from the 90s :D

Besides, I was kidding anyways. I know what you really meant was there is no point in trying to put a pimp daddy big-draw stereo into an electric car as they exist today. ;)

More like a man? The Prius could be pink and I wouldn't feel less manly. If I had a Prius I would drive the piss out of it and it would still be cheap on gas. Just because you have an economy car doesn't mean you need to hypermile it.

My folks have a powder blue one that I do use from time to time when its a short trip and I do not want to get the stang out. Going from one to the other I have no intentions of racing the prius although it seems I only see cool cars when I am in it. Last week I did have a fun trip to home depot in the stang when a new RT charger pulled up behind me to play a little. Of course he would have eaten me currently, can't wait to get the heads/cam in to at least make it interesting.
