Quick Question on Sub Wiring

Post by Phoenixcolt »

Sup guys, I got my Rsdc102 back into my car today. Quick question, and I think it's a silly one, but I need to make sure.

I used 12 gauge speaker wire from the sub enclosure to one set of pos and neg terminals on the sub, and then I only had 14 or 16 gauge on hand for the other coil so I took the smaller wire, stripped the ends, twisted the ends together, and ran it from the open set of terminals.

That shouldn't be a problem right? Both sides of the wire are transferring the current the same way, but I was just checking since I want to make sure it won't be harmful in any way.

you have activated the self destruct sequence I am sorry to say...........

Just kidding, its not ideal but the chance of hearing the difference of thicker wire is pretty slim. When you get a chance I would upgrade it but that is just because I am anal about wire.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

No problem.

Just make it match for us anal types when you have the chance/money.

Thanks guys, I am fairly anal too and was quite annoyed that I had to run i like that but I didn't have any of the 12 gauge PG wire left, just the PG 14 gauge, so I figured at least it was the same brand. I will dig a bit more and see if I have a short strand in the wire box.

I adjusted the gain on my X1200.1 to put out 1000 watts to the RSdC102. It sounds seriously louder than the Tantrum 1200 I was using a while back on the same sub. I think part of it is that I ran 1/0 from the battery to the trunk for the Xenon and in preparation for the hopefully big system overhaul in the spring now that I got the car stuff all straightened out, and it was only 4 gauge for the Tantrum.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I would have done 14g inside the box, 12 outside, but meh... no big deal in the meantime.

I will probably get on that this weekend if the weather is decent. I want to run a little bit longer of a speaker wire from the enclosure to the amp anyway and the enclosure needs to come out to do that since it is fitted and secured to the corner of the trunk. I am quite restricted since I didn't run enough length of speaker and ground wire so my X1200 isn't sitting as secure and flat as I'd like it to be.

Anyone know if there is a wire terminal/connection out there that is longer than the norm? The terminal cup has pretty long connections and I would love make a more solid connection if I can with some longer female connectors if that makes sense...or I suppose I can cut down the connections but there is no room to get in there due to the foam I installed to take up some of the airspace.

Darn, I guess the PG wire I have is only 16 gauge. I will have to find something decent at an audio store.
