Sub amp thrown a wobbly
Flicked the system on for session on the way home from work, damn no bass! checked when I got home, my ZX600seems to be dead, checked all the obvious and did spot the overload led pop on for a second on one of the attempts to get her into action, now on my carpet with the cover off and all looks okay, but what would I know ... oh cock ...
Well any input? new amp or try and get it looked at? need something reliable
Was running two ti12s 3ohms each, anyone know if that was too much for her? subs were in a twin box with speaker wires from each sub to the amp in bridged mode.
Allways happens at the worst time doesnt it, spending out lots at the moment, as getting married this September.

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
Sounds like you had the subs wired in parallel for a 1.5 ohm load, instead of series for a 6 ohm load.
I doubt the ZX600 would last long bridged with a 1.5 ohm load.

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
Did I? the odd thing is no smell, didnt stop whilst running, just didnt turn on this morning after running fine last night. I thought the zx600 was stable at 2ohms and no matter what load shown it wouldnt go below that?
I had both subs wires running to the amp nad not to each other? does that help, is series where I would wire the amp to one sub, then from one sub to the other? wouldnt that be very quiet at 6ohms?
maybe I need two amps then to replace it?
Thanks for your input

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
It doesn't matter if you run wires from each sub directly to the amp's speaker terminals. It will still present the amp with the same ohm load.PhuckinGood wrote:I had both subs wires running to the amp nad not to each other? does that help, is series where I would wire the amp to one sub, then from one sub to the other? wouldnt that be very quiet at 6ohms?
Google search "parallel wiring" and "series wiring" for instant diagrams.

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
Just checked the titanium 12s are 3.01 ohms each, so is that right that wiring them both direct to the amp shows a 1.5 ohms load?? maybe need two amps then if thats the case, oh well ....
Just had a good look at this amp and seems nothing wrong, like its stuck in shutdown

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
Well, if you were running one sub on the left channel and the other sub on the right channel, a 3 ohm load per channel shouldn't be a big deal. But if you bridged the two channels to power the subs as one channel, then simply connecting both positives and both negatives of each 3 ohm speaker to the positive and negative sides of the single, bridged channel, then your speakers are essentially wired in parallel and the amp is seeing a 1.5 ohm.PhuckinGood wrote:Just checked the titanium 12s are 3.01 ohms each, so is that right that wiring them both direct to the amp shows a 1.5 ohms load?? maybe need two amps then if thats the case, oh well ....

I would imagine that a 1.5 ohm load would make that thing really hot. You're probably better using one channel to power one speaker because a 3 ohm load should make the amp produce more power per channel than if you bridged the channels to the power the subs wired in series with a 6 ohm load.

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
if you sub is showing a 3.something load and it a single voice coil than these are 4ohm
again like i said pg never made any 3ohm products
but here is the manual and it show 3.01 but the sub is still rated at 4ohm

Great info thanks, so it seems it was okay how I had it wired up?kg1961 wrote:if you sub is showing a 3.something load and it a single voice coil than these are 4ohm

I have the opportunity of a 600.2 at a good price so would need to be sure, dont want to buy that wire it up and it goes wrong again. Or would you only run one sub with it to be safe? Only amp I can see so far that will do it is a Rainbow thats stable to 1ohm
Oh well, thanks for the help on this as need to be sure it wasnt my wiring it up wrong

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
Yeah its a worry, i am running a zx350v2 on the comps, its hard to get the caps replaced in the uk, so its just a case of run it until it goes, sounds good though and been fine for 3 years, the zx600 I only bought a year back from ebay, so not too much loss. trouble is never really strayed from PG gear, maybe the time has come to look elsewhere, not sure where to start, thanks for your input mate.

Re: Sub amp thrown a wobbly
its common for a speaker to show a lower ohm value on a meter then what it is rated at. No big deal but it is still called a 4 ohm woofer even if it measures 3.4 ohms.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

So in your opinion was this just th end of the amps life or it was being asked to much? just trying to work out if I can replace like with like or need a rethinkttocs wrote:its common for a speaker to show a lower ohm value on a meter then what it is rated at. Not sure yet, so far we have debated the impedance of your subs more then we have talked about the amp.PhuckinGood wrote:So in your opinion was this just th end of the amps life or it was being asked to much? just trying to work out if I can replace like with like or need a rethinkttocs wrote:its common for a speaker to show a lower ohm value on a meter then what it is rated at. You said the over load light is on, or was on? try disconnecting the speakers from the amp and powering it up, if nothing changes then try disconnecting the rca's as well. Have you tested for voltage on the power and remote terminals?
