"ported" XMAX

Post by smgreen20 »

As I was hanging out at the local CA shop today, a guy came in with the most ghetto rigged install I've seen. His sub amp shut off and he couldn't figure out why, so he brought it in to be fixed. As I do most times I'm there, I help out for fun.

First thing we do is check the fuses, one was blown. Replace it and tada! The amp powers back up, but he was also having noise issues with his Kenwood HU. As we dig deeper into how this was hooked up, we find that the factory radio fuse was blown as well as the ignition fuse. We had no panel cover to tell us what was what and all but one fuse tested good. We replaced the one bad fuse and we have a constant now. Still couldn't find the ignition fuse spot so we ran a jumper over from under the steering column. We traced the constant and ignition wire (they were connected together behind the dash) all the way back to the sub amps main power terminals.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!???

So, he had 4ga wire from the battery back to the sub amp, from the sub amps + terminal there was 3 more wires, a jumper to the mids/highs amp and the wire ran to the HU to provide power, and the last one to the remote turn on to the sub amp. The mids/highs amp had its remote jumped from the + of its terminal.

We then turned our attention to the four 12" subs he had......

XMAX 12's

We were joking about this, but this brings a "Hole" new concept to a ported "sub".

The one on the right has a bigger hole in it then the one on the left, but both bottom XMAX's had holes in the dust caps. The top 2 were in decent shape, thank God.

yes that is not a ported box, that is a ported speaker. Its easier to do then you think when you are not carefull with the screwdriver/drill when mounting them....
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

Haha! Love the pic !
reminds me of the time when I sold a JBL GTI 15 inch woofer [real deal at the time] and the guy appearently made a pic of it after he bought it.
He dropped his camera on it while making a pic from above; dust cap destroyed. This happened at his home; he returned with some friends the next day claiming it was in that state when he bought it but he had not seen it....
One of his friends though spilled the beans and he reluctantly admitted.
The speaker only needed a new dustcap, I needed to blow off steam after they left...
By now I think back of it with a smile; the look on the face of the buyer after one of his friends said "could it have been the camera that fell on it?" PRICELESS.

This guy is a genius. Porting your subs lets the bass out! But because the port is on the same surface of the woofer, there is minimal cancellation or delay! You gain at least 10dB with this mod because all the bass wasted inside the box is let out.
