New Sub making a click sound

Post by MykeJ »

I just got a Ti210 and I have it running of a SD6001. I can not hear the sound when sitting in the car. When I open the hatch I hear a clicking sound form the sub and I am not sure what it is. If I touch it softy it seems to go away but comes right back when remove my fingure. This is with the amp tuned up just passed half way and my head unit half way the outs on my head unit are 2.3 volts. I was going to set my amp with a dimm tonight at work to get it set close to where it should be. I was being lazy and got a pre made box it 1.24 feet ported not sure to what. It's a temp box to see if I like how it sounds ported. If anyone has any ideas whats wrong please let me know. I hate to have to take it back and wait a week for a new one. :(

Some possibilities....

-loose dustcap (if not glued 100% of the way around it will make a noise)
-suspension misalignment (the voice coil former may be touching the pole piece as the speaker moves)
-lead wire "jump roping" (lead wires can jump and smack the spider causing a noise)

Of these, only the lead wires have any hope of being fixed yourself. Sometimes they can be bend to the side a bit, or even desoldered and slightly shortened.

I just went out and checked it again and it’s at over half volume. I have Alpine head unit that that goes up to 63. When I have the volume at 38 it starts the clicking noise and it must have been my imagination but it does not stop when I put my figure on it. The click gets louder when I turn the volume up. Is the amp clipping or is it the sub screwed up? I have never had an issue like this before. Thanks for your help.

any chance you have too much wire in the box and its slapping the sub when it moves?

I could have to much wire in it not sure. I just tested it with a meter and I had 22.5 volts with a 50hz tone at 45 volume. It should be at 24.49 volts so I should be safe there. May be it is just a screwed up sub. This would be a 1st for me and I have had a few subs in my days this is the 3rd kind from PG Xmax, RSD and now Ti2.

if you can, try to flip the box over to a different side and see if moving the wire makes it stop, that is of course if you do not want to just take the sub out and look.

I tried this 3 ways and I still had the sound when I faced it up it sounded like the sound got a little louder not 100% on that.

I just pulled the sub out of the box the wire was a little long so I made it shorter and I still have same clicking sound so I am pretty sure its the sub WTF. I hate returning stuff. They ordered the sub for me so I will have to wait for a new one.

OK I got it figured out it was not the sub it was the acc power going to the amp. I must have taped in to the wrong wire not sure how tha amp even worked. I noticed in the morning the red led on the amp was lighting up when I turned the volume up. So I unhooked the sub and it still happend so then I unhooked 1 rca then the other and with both RCAs out it still was going in to protect mode so the only thing left was the acc power wire so I changed that and then everything worked great. Crazy stuff going on in my car.

Its likely there was a severe voltage drop making the amplifier do odd things or run on the verve of the protection circuit.

Glad to know you got it figured, how does it sound?

It sounds good :D I am happy with the choice I made of the SD600.1 and the Ti210. The crazy thing is I don't like how ported subs sound 99% of the time so I all ways run sealed but I have it in a ported box and I am real happy with it. To be honest I think that sub could take some more power because it's taken the 600 with out a problem at all. I will say it does push some air. If I did not want to keep some room in the back of my car I would get a 2nd sub just for the fun of it. I don't need a 2nd one but why not for the fun factor
