Need a good SQ 12" sub?

Post by knightrider358 »

Ok guys.... A few years ago ya'll helped me decide on a new sub then. It was a RSDC 12" and it sounded awesome as hell, by far one of the best subs I've ever had.

So tonight I installed a new Alpine CDA-9855 HU & a PG TLD 66. I removed the TBA set and the AudioControl DQX because the HU has all the active Xover & EQ controls I need plus it has front, rear, sub and time alignment all right there. So I believe this HU has all I need plus I end up having less components.

So anyways here's a current rundown of my setup, inline in this order.

Alpine CDA-9855, TLD 66, PG ZX450 to 2 sets of PG RSD 6.5's (no tweeter) & 2 sets of 3.5" PB mid ranges + 1 center PB 3.5" the 3.5"s are used for mid range and aren't as harsh as tweeters, then a PG Ti600.2 for sub.

Now the issue, I think the sub was at it it's end of life (4 years old) cause its pretty much tapping hard when it's hitting hard. So I believe it's time to replace it.

So guys I needs a good SQ replacement 12" for a sealed application with no lower than a 4 ohm load for my Ti600.2 bridged?

Any good suggestions?

Please and thanks guys!

The new PG Ti212 I believe is similar to the RSDC sub.

Hold on man... figure out what this tapping is first! Are you sure you're not clipping? Is your signal feed good? Take the sub out of the box and play it free air (at a slightly lower volume) and see if you can figure out what's causing the noise.

i don't really believe in all those "modern headunits" with everything in it but for maybe 20 % of the price

an old skool unit cost new back in the days.......putting the tba set aside and a tld66 in place.......

i would still prefere the good old skool stuff.......please correct me if i'm wrong.......

for a new subwoofer :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: jl audio 12W7ae.......

x2 My RSDc 12 is 4 years old and still rocking hard. To this day I haven't found a better sub for my preferences.

x3. If you don't have a bench you can still do it inside to try and have a better chance at spotting anything visibly out of whack. You don't need shit other than a home theater receiver and an mp3 player or an 1/8" to RCA for your computer out. I use Audacity (free download) for my poor man bench, it has a built in tone generator. Find out the Fs and generate a 30 second tone at .5 or so amplitude at/close to Fs and run it through the sub out of the box, start with the volume all the way down and see what's going on with the driver. Just make sure you use the volume at the top/on your computer speaker panel vs the gain in the program if you need the signal hotter, but the meters will also tell you if you clip. You'll implode any home theater receiver long before you damage that speaker this way unless you do something dumb.

Even if its 4 ohm a lot of HT receivers allow you to run 2 sets of speakers (A and B) and they typically are parallel so as long as you don't hook anything else up and take it easy you'll be fine.

I've never had an RDSc but I have a 10" that was doing the same thing, turned out to be the surround separated from the frame side, couldn't tell with the grill that was over it cause it was fine around the cone. That's the difference between a few bucks and <1 hour vs a new driver/$$$.

btw you can simulate the sub in your car too if need be using Audacity. Rip a track from a cd that you play in the car or use any audio file of a song and open with Audacity, highlight the whole track (edit menu; select all). Then from the Effect menu select LowPass Filter, enter the frequency you roll off your LP in the car at and select the curve up to 48db per. Playing the file after that will be the same as the signal your sub sees in your car.

Useful little program considering its free

Need a good SQ 12" sub?

Post by knightrider358 »

Thanks stupid, and everyone else. Let me give a lil more details. So y'all know bout 4 years ago I bought the sub and did a pretty good install in my old 98 4runner, I built a spec ported box for the sub. It damn hard for a single 12". Then back in dec. of last year I bought my new 09 4runner. So I took everything out of the old one and installed it in the new one but I changed one thing, I went to a smaller 1.2 cu ft sealed box. The ported I used and still have was about 2.5 cu ft tuned at 32hz.

I figured goin to the sealed wouldn't b an issue because its sealed.

But now that I think about it more stupid, I noticed the "rattling" noise a few weeks ago before I changed HU & the TBA set. I just thought at the the time it was a loose panel rattling.

So I think it's been blown for a lil bit now. Ill try removing it from the box and free air play it at lower volumes to see how she does.

I hope this gives a lil more insight to my prob.

Thanks again guys!

I'm with Stipud. (I really just posted to say that). Pop it out of the box and play it with the volume down is the easiest first step. Could be tons of easy fixes. Unless you got paper like that, than f it, go buy a new ti sub!

Need a good SQ 12" sub?

Post by knightrider358 »

Well guys, so I installed the sub back in that ported I built for the old for 4runner and did some re-tuning on the amp and the HU and wa-la. Deep smooth tight bass and its funny the amps sens setting is at 6v and all bass on the HU is at 0 and damn it sounds so much better even better than the old setup I did in the old 4runner.

Ti2 and RSDc woofers are very similar.

You might check that the lead wire is not hitting the cone at high excursion on RSDc, I have seen that issue before. If that is the case, you should be able to bend the terminal so it doesn't hit.

Need a good SQ 12" sub?

Post by knightrider358 »

Thanks Morgan, I checked everything out physically when I pulled it out of the sealed box and stupid I hooked it up free air wise and played it at low volume and there was no rattling so I assume it was either box causing it or a setting I had it on cause as I said I did some readjusting of settings.

Hey Morgan I spoke w u over some emails a couple years ago about locations near where I live that were authorized dealers of the new rereleased of PG. I was wondering in the last couple years since we spoke have there been any new dealers near Winchester or Harrisonburg, VA that y'all have picked up?

Thanks
