ported VS seal
I'm trying to figure out my next box and need help. I'll be doing 4 12" on 2 TI800.1 and I know if I go with a ported box it will have to be huge. I always had ported boxes and was wondering what would be the down fall of going with a seal box. It will be going in the back of a 2005 Montana with 3 row of seat.
I'll be using 4 Soundstream Rubicon 12, 2 subs per amp.
I have 48" wide X 16" deep X 26" high (28" max), I'm I better off going with a seal box over a ported box?
Any help would be great.
What are the pro and cons of a sealed sub box.

Re: ported VS seal
In general, sealed are better in every way except for overall output. With 4 subs on 1600w I don't think you will find it lacking in a sealed setup, and you will cut the box size in half.

Thanks I think I'll go with a seal box this time around, soundstream email me back today with the specs on the subs.
What would be a good cubic feet per sub?

I'd aim around 1-1.25cuft, which is pretty much standard for 90% of sealed 12's. At most 1.5cuft if you want to extend the low end, but then you'll probably want a lower crossover setting and reduced gains.

Ok thanks, I always had ported box and I don't want to loose that deep bass feeling. In a sealed box does every driver need to be in its own seal chamber?
Re: ported VS seal
No, but the bracing that you add to separate them doesn't hurt either. Since you are running two separate amps I'd probably suggest separating the two pairs from each other at least. A shared box is possible, but you'd have to be very sure that the crossover and gain settings are perfectly identical. Alternatively, you could also strap the amplifiers... a little bird at PG told me that was possible with only the 800.1's. If it was my car though, I'd just go with separated enclosures for each, and run the two amps normally.RobertJr79 wrote:Ok thanks, I always had ported box and I don't want to loose that deep bass feeling. I read that you can strap the 800.1 but to a single 4 ohm voice coil. The subs I'll be using are 4 single voice coil.
I would like to try and build a box like the one in the picture, but don't know how to figure out the cubic feet. I have build boxes before but they have always been regular ported box.
I just don't want a plain looking box, I would like some thing nice.

3.0cu ft X 4 will be a little bid too much so if you wanna play with four subs, sealed will be the best option......RobertJr79 wrote:stipud wrote:I'd aim around 1-1.25cuft, which is pretty much standard for 90% of sealed 12's. If you wanna build one very big box for 4 12inch, check first if you will be able to get it into you're car or not....
these days there are single subs that will give the same or more output then those 4 together.....
but let's not talk about there price.....

Re: ported VS seal
how many seats are you going to give up for you're install ????
I quess if you just leave in the two in the front, you can put in 8 subs.....

All 3 rows need to stay in, there the two front captain seats, 2nd row is also 2 captain seat (but was one taking out) and the 3rd row is a bench. We have 3 kids so we need the the seats.

Re: ported VS seal
You think this box would work for the 4 12" Its 9.95ft3 before displacement tuned to 32 hertz. Port is 18" long. So its just under 2.5ft3 per subs.
EDIT: Port displacement is 1.04ft3 I think if I did that right. So I guess it would be to small that would bring me down to 8.91ft3 so 2.2275ft3 per sub. Not including sub displacement and bracing.
I'm really trying to stay with a ported box over seal, but the seal box is not out of the question.
The rear seat are 28" high from the floor to the top of the back rest. So I could go up to 28" but willing to go up to 30" if I have to, just would been nice to stay at or under the back rest. As for cargo area I don't have one of the middle captain seat in so that what we use right now anyways, so I don't mind losing teh rear of the van. Also is it a bad thing if I were to mount the amps and the back of the box? I would double up on mdf where the amps would be mounted.

Re: ported VS seal
Any input on the box? Also have a question about strapping the two 800, I know you can strap the two 800 to get 1600 watts at a single 4 ohms voice coil. But does it have to be a single 4 ohms sub or can it be used with a 4 ohms load? I have 4 4 ohm sub and I can get a final load of 4 ohm would that work if I would strap the two 800?
ported VS seal
I asked the same question, I was told you can use multiple drivers as long as the load stays at 4ohm. That being said I would like to know how. If the amp is rated at 800rms@2ohms do you get 1600watts strapped with a 4ohm load.

You get 1600 watts at 4 ohms. check you email.
I think the amp see 2 ohms each and the the final load would be 4 ohms. I'm just guessing here, I could be wrong.
I'm thinking of doing it with my 4 12" and see what happens. I wonder if the amps work harder at 2 ohms each or at 4 ohms strap. Or do the hard just as hard either way.

But in that case strapping would be pointless I think. Might as well just run two 12's on each amp a 2ohms you get the same result. And you don't risk fu- baring two good amp by accident.

Re: ported VS seal
The reason I want to strap is it would be so much easer to set the gain and crossover as I would only have to do it on the master amp. So all 4 sub will be matched with the same power. As setting the gains and crossover on 2 amps and try to get them to match.Drock wrote:But in that case strapping would be pointless I think. Here my box I design tonight and I think I'm going to start building it tomorrow. It doesn't show but it double baffle in the front, tuned at around 32.5 hertz and 11.2ft^3.
Let me know what you think of it.
EDIT: The two top sub will not be so high in the box, its only my second time using the software.
