I bought an M100 and M44 for 100 dollars a few months back. I only bothered to test the M100 as I didn't have a use for the M44, but I wasn't going to pass up the chance to buy them for so cheap. The person who sold them to me was a mechanic, the car they came from was sold to him and the audio system wasn't even hooked up at the time, so he never tested them nor knew what they were worth. The M100 is mint on the inside, no issues at all, but the M44 which at the time I didn't have a use for, I never even bothered with. Well I opened it today and found 2 caps that are bulging, and charred remains of a resistor. It looks to of split in half and there is scorch marks all around it. It seems like a pretty isolated spot though, and I'm thinking of fixing it. I'm basically wondering what is detailed in it, and what parts do I need.
I'm building a Nissan 240sx S14, that has all the speaker wiring completely ruined and all the speakers are blown. I bought 4 75w rms each 6.5s for the M44, and a 250w RMS 10" sub for the M100. Plus Phoenix Gold speaker wiring for everything. I'm very happy I looked inside the M44 before I installed it. I feel as though it wouldn't of gone well when I hooked up the power.

M44, fire (Resistor exploded)
Re: M44, fire (Resistor exploded)
You will need to change the caps out on the M100 before you install. The caps WILL fail on this amp too...........Nice buy for $100 though!!

What caps do you recommend for the two amps. Also do you know how I can find out what resistor it was that blew? The thing is just a charred mess and I have no idea what the values of it are.

I would only use Panasonic, nichicon or chemicon brands. Also have to be rated for 105c.

You might be able to find some reference pics on Ampguts.com
Good luck with the fix, you wont regret it as these are some of the best amps ever made IMO.
Welcome!

wouldn't it be smarter to contact eric D or Valeks for a fix ?? if you're not know what you are doing or putting in the wrong components,Jolting wrote:What caps do you recommend for the two amps. you can make even a bigger mess of it.
I have 5 M44's, with some pics of it. i have one or two with also those "air bubbles" on top of the blue rail caps.....there fine !!!!!
there could be more damaged or wrong than that you maybe expect visually...... if you mess it up, the only option left is
to keep it for parts........
If you get those amps back fine both, you will certainly enjoy them..... M44 on the speakers, M100 on the sub(s).......
just an advice, not more not less......
Re: M44, fire (Resistor exploded)
if the caps are showing signs that they are expanding then there is a good chance that they might be on the way out. I would not run one myself, the penalty for failure to replace $15 worth of caps is alot higher both in repair time(if possible) and $$$.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

Thanks guys for the responses!
I got to use the M100 for a few months and I absolutely loved it. If it wasn't for the fact that after using the M100 and falling in love, I probably would of just sold them M44 as a parts unit. I'm way too excited to hear the M44 for myself than to not use it. I have been quoted for repairs for around 130 for the two amps to be recapped and the resistor replaced. I do have experience soldering and I'm going to have a good look at how everything is laid out before I pay someone to do it. I'm more of a DIY guy, and I really don't have 130 and would have to put the build on hold for a little over a month before I would get paid.
