Dumb question of the day (part2)

Browsing some install pics of front components got me thinking, where I have seen mids being installed in the footwells of various poeples builds they are in a very small sealed enclosure, on the flip side I have always door mounted my mids and allowed them breath into the whole door. Got me wondering whats the correct way to install if there is one, should they be in sealed boxes and if so what difference enclosure size would have on sound and performance, or are they designed to breath into the doors. Has anyone else ever pondered these issues!?

every speaker is different. Some like sealed boxes and some do not. My diamond audio hex componants sounded better in a sealed enclosure but that is not too say the new ones will as these were a couple years old.

the most important thing (or fault) is when you put them in doors that they are not in the same area as you're

kickbass woofers. they have to be in a separated place or enclosure......cause the kickbass woofers will get influence

on them.....

doors, pillar pods or kickpanels are the most used places .... i prefer them in the pillar pods with the tweeters....

other people will have another opinion of course.......

i'm talking here about 3, 4 or max 5 inch mids of course.......

If they are the Diamond Hex's from the 90s they were very nice indeed, do you remember the Macdaddy subs too!

I have gone and ordered the new Elite.65 componants and was nosing at installs, so is the concensus here that they will prob work best door mounted with the whole door to breath into? As the are only a two set so the mid will getting mid-bass duty too. Shame they dont make a three way set, it was only my brand loyalty that kept me PG for these.

speakers are generally made for infinite baffle configerations but that is not too say that they will not sound better sealed. Another advantage of a sealed enclosure in the door is that it will keep the speaker try.... You can make enclosures out of tupperware and sound damping to attach to baffles with out too much trouble and if you don't like the sound, always cut out the back section so that it stays dry but still sounds better.

Putting component speakers in small sealed enclosures will help with their mechanical power handling (helps keep them from moving too far). It won't help with thermal power handling (voice coil melting) though.

I have run middle of the road components on 400W RMS per side, in small enclosures. In a door these speakers would have ripped to shreds on that level of power.

Thanks for the input so far

It may be interesting to try both metthods, I have door pods made which these speakers should drop straight in, should be quite straight forward to blank off the back of one pod with 12mm, then have a listen to both. My hunch would be the sealed pod would lack the the bass of the infinate baffle, I could be completely wrong.

If anyone thinks this is a worthwhile test I will give it a shot.

from what I have seen most speakers tend to gain a slight amount of bass/mid-bass from enclosures. Like I said though you can try it and remove it if you don't like it but will always wonder about it if you don't do it.
