HELP ME DECIDE ... 1, 2, 4 ohm on sub channel? ( ti1600.5 )

Post by damo4833 »

I have the ti1600.5 on the way - I plan on strappin the sub channel to a pair of the newest Alpine typeR 8" subs (most likely ported) .......... I really need help to decide on 1, 2, 4 ohm to feed the amp.

Suggestions would be appreciated - as to the load for the amp AND any other suggestions, warnings, tips, hints, notes .... regarding THIS amp pretty much anything!!

BTW,If it makes any difference as to any sort of info from y'all - Tundra doublecab w stock hu, AC three.1 eq, esp3, mbquart components -

Thanks

FYI - strapping when talking about subs and sub channels is a technical term meaning to take two amps and combine their output into one big amp so its a little confusing to say your strapping 8's to your sub amp.

With that being said, do you like the sound of 8's? I had 4 of them in my last install and they were good but left me missing that low end that they just can't fill. Personally I would do a single 10 over a pair of 8's, actually have in the past.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

Oops...wiring, hookin, cable'n, connecting, pluggin, running - my bad. I just happened to choose the incorrect term.
I haven't purchased the 8" subs yet - I totally LOVE 10" subs. That would bemy favorite choice.

I just don't have room without the sacrifice of rear floor space. I use that floor space all the time for work ... my enclosure design is to face the back wall in a very similar fashion to the Tundra "stealth" box from JL.
10s are too tall to be on edge and pointed to the rear wall...

Dang-it ttocs, now u got me think even more now!! Thanks a lot ;)
Hmmm - maybe I should just begin the search for the JL 8w?

Ugggh.

8's are cool if that is what you are restricted too. I wanted to try them out and by using 4 of them I got the same impact that 10s would on higher notes but there was just a limit too how low they could go and it always left me wondering. my new system will have 9's in the doors and 3 - 10's in the trunk, I think it should be ok on going low :).

Not sure what the truck looks like. Can you get your 10" if it was down/up firing?

I will revisit the back seat area ... again.
So, back to my question of resistance. Does 1, 2 or 4ohm turn out to be the best? I completely understand the "stated" power from PG, just not sure if the difference can actually be heard at 1ohm vs 2ohm.

If im not mistaken 2ohm will be less strain on the amp and system -

I need suggsstions...

The Alpine Type R 8's are probably the best combination of SQ and output from an 8" sub out there. If I had to go with an 8, that's what I'd use. But, they are only 8's, so what ttocs said is right, and they can only take about 350 rms, so i'd be looking at running 2 ohm.

That being said, the Alpine Type R 10" subs only have a mounting depth of about 5 7/8", and you should be able to get a pair of those firing up or down. Those can take 1000 watts rms, and you could easily run 1 ohm. But, if you can do that, the Phoenix Gold Ti2 10" sub is only 1/8" deeper than that, has 8db better sensitivity, and you can still run the amp at 1 ohm, and you'll get a lot more output.

fwiw I had a Ti2 10" firing up, and most people thought I had a pair, or even 12's, so firing up into the seat doesn't hurt the sound much. Probox makes an enclosure for the Chevy Crew Cab that you can look at to get an idea of what it would look like. (don't use the prefab though)
Being loud without good sound quality is pointless, but having good sound quality without being loud is also pointless.

I'm not firing up into the seat nor am I using the standard style pickup under-seat box design ... I'm taking a totally different approach. Thus my reasoning for going with 8" .....

U know I could plug the old Epicenter in and really whoop up on their abilities!!! Snap-Crackle-Pop!!!

well well well ---
I finally had the chance to listen to the typeR Alpine 8" subs.

WOW!!!

That's all wrapped up in a nut shell.

They're in a prototype box I have designed to fit the Tundra DoubleCab trucks. About 2 months off & on - prep, research, time & effort ... It fits snugly under the larger rear seat. I is about .4cuft for each sub - sealed tight and musically - FANTASTIC. I hope to offer the box to some of the peeps over at the various Tundra forums.

These are run off an older 5ch Kicker kx700.5 giving the pair about 400 watts.

I can't wait to give a pair over to the ti1600.5 and see what that amp does for them!!! I'm thinking of porting this second version of the box since it's a wee bit larger for those subs...

SO - anybody know of a Tundra DC needing a box for a pair of 8" ... hit me back!!

The sad thing is that the Type R 10's have a depth less than 5", and you could fit those in there as well. If you think the 8's are tuff, the 10's will be better.

10s would be super nice ... BUT, i'm not doing the basic under-seat enclosure that looks like a briefcase crap.
This'n is stealthy and slim fitting the corner back wall and floor space. Right where the seat folds...

i'll post pics later.
