ALPINE 3558 troubleshooting/repair help needed

Post by Mr.X »

Hello everyone! I just recently bought an Alpine 3558. I have been wanting one of these for a long time! I was so pumped when it arrived. I hooked it up on my test bench to just listen to it and drool!
I was using my Sony CDX-C90 head unit for the source and I had it hooked up to some Infinity BETA 8" woofers.
All connections were done properly and I had it bridged in 2 channel mode. I powered up the head unit and the amp powered up fine. But it never comes out of MUTE Mode. the status monitor led shows all is good. But the Mute led stays orange (which means its in muted mode) no audio output.
Has anyone else owned one of these amps and had experience with this issue? Are there any people that you could refer to me that will work on Alpine 3558's ? Im pretty bummed to say the least. Amp is in excellent physical condition, no signs of abuse at all. Or is this just user error? Am I missing something? Thanks for any and all help/advice.

Anyone? I have a copy of the Service Manual which includes the schematics. After reading it I have learned that this amp has relays to the speaker outputs that are open during amp power up which puts the amp in Mute mode. Once the amp has stabilized the relays close and the amp unmutes. Since the mute indicator is showing the amp is in mute mode and I have no audio I'm thinking... Could the relays be bad? Could anyone who has experienced this same issue with this amp or any amp repair guys out there point me in the right direction to fix this issue? Its a beautiful amp and it would be a shame not to be able to enjoy it. Thanks!

You realize this is a Phoenix Gold specific site right?
Im not saying some of the technology doesnt apply to other brands but if people here wanted to talk Alpine, they would probably go to DIYMA.

we did have an alpine nut on here at one time down in Australia I think it was but can't remember now. We have clarion freaks, PPI and of course a bunch of PG freaks but its been so long since I paid attention to an alpine amp(and I think the others as well) that it isn't that we don't want to help you, we just don't know...
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.

Looks like @Mr X has found the right place to ask his question or someone has the exact same problem?

Yes I do realize this is a Phoenix Gold site  Thats why I'm a member of the forum. I'm the proud owner of 3 ZPA0.5's and 3 ZPA0.3's and 4 old school ti Elite12d's. I also know there happens to be some really good amp repair guys on here as well. So I thought I might ask the question here. You are absolutely correct, DIYMA is probably the appropriate place to post this question... A simple " Nope, we cant help you" would have been enough... @Prime Mova, yes I posted on DIYaudio also and found someone that had some experience with this particular amp. Thanks for pointing that out.
