PG Titanium 800.1 Stuck in Thermal Protection

Post by jrwilshire2003 »

Hi all

I have a Titanium 800.1 stuck in thermal mode. The yellow led is on and the fans are running at full speed and the 3 blue triangle LEDS are not lit up. Nothing is connected to the amp apart from the power supply. Anyone have any simple suggestions before I send it off for a repair?

Many thanks!

Was it working previously? Did you or someone else who is not a qualified tech disassemble and reassemble it? For that matter, tech or not, did anyone unfamiliar with these disassemble and reassemble it?

If it went into thermal after being opened and then then reassembled, it's almost certainly a broken trace under the rca jacks. When the board isn't seated quite correctly and the case screw is reinstalled, it cuts a thermal trace under the rca jacks. Iirc you'll likely need to remove the rca jacks to see the damage. I can't remember off hand if the trace in question on the 800 is on the top of the board between the jacks and board, or on the bottom board.

I've seen it happen many times on the big ti amps.

It was serviced last October but has been working fine up until this week. After leaving it on for a while it cuts in and out of thermal protection varying the fan speed as well. Maybe a temp sensor issue?

I've never seen a bad thermal sensor on any of these. It uses several ptc polyswitches as thermal sensors. I'd still bet on the trace under the rca connector. It's far more rare and unlikely, but it could be a failing comparator which is used to supervise and trigger the different fault conditions. It's almost always an open trace that causes this, and that goes for any of the original PG amps. It's easy enough to figure out which of the thermal circuits are the problem, but it's not likely to be something you are equipped to fix yourself.

Just to let you know this was solved as broken legs on a transistor. Hope this helps someone in the future if need be. Many thanks guys!
