Anybody know how to remove a Trojan?

Post by mr tibbs »

Not that kind of Trojan, the computer kind!! Get your head out of the gutter fowler!

The piece of crapola PC I have been talking about has a trojan. How do I know? Because Mcafee points it out (with a file name and all), but won't remove the damn thing because it's in the system32 folder. I found one site that told me to enter safe mode on start up and physically remove it, but is that safe? I did try Avast as well, but that didn't do the trick either.

Generally, if the file is "in use" you won't be able to remove it via traditional methods.

Some AV will "quarantine" a trojan so that next time you boot, it won't start up and then it can remove it.

I would say that you should find out everything you can about this particular trojan and removal techniques. Most AV sites will have a write up about specific viruses and trojans and removal techniques should their normal software not be able to remove it.

Try safemode as it *should* prevent the trojan from starting up at which point you would be able to remove it.

^also, as ryan said, if the program finds something in use that it can't remove, it will prompt you to restart, and then will commence removing it before windows loads again upon your restart

Well, between Avast, Spybot, and a few cleaner programs it looks like I might have got the bugger!! I did update Spybot and I'm thinking that's what got it. I guess I'll try to boot it up again tomorrow and see if that did the trick or not.

Thanks as always for all the help guys!!

Second on the AVG suggestion.

But just boot into safe mode, delete the file, and if you screw winders, fuck it, it needed to be re-installed anyways.

Use AVG/Grisoft or Avast.

update either fully. Restart computer in safe Mode (press F8 ) while loading. Run Anti-virus app. It should be able to pull the Virus. If not, note the location, and re-boot to safe mode, delete file.

Also try going into the "advanced mode" of spybot. You can use the tools options to delete startup files so they will not load on start up.

If that all fails try "HiJack This", but be for-warned it is not for the novice as you can seriously screw up your computer with a wrong click.

I think we've established that "Ka Ka" and "Tukki Tukki" don't work.

x2 on the prevx1. I tried AVG,Spybot, and a couple others when I was having problems. Prevx1 was the only one that worked for me. Too bad it expired.

never tried prevx1 myself...will have to check it out and see how it works.
But for any of you who do virus and spyware removal for a living, let me tell you, not just one program will handle everything that is out there. The virus and spyware realm some of the best software out there will only catch MAYBE 15-20% of what is infecting your system. And belive me....I know! (work in a comp store as the senior tech). Use about 8 different Antispyware tools, and 4 Anti viruses does not always catch everything....plus I know how to remove most of the viruses and spyware manually that my tools do not.

This is very true.......

I personally Firewall the shit out of my system (2x software + 1x hardware), and watch my processes closely.
