XS 4600 yea or nay??

Post by 07ramjam »

This is my first post and to be honest Ill be more of a reader than poster.I was invited here from someone on another forum.Im sorry I cant remember who,but thanks.

Anyway I just picked up a used XS 4600.I got it for 75.00.Im alilttle disappointed though.Im still learning about car audio,so after I bought it I realized it doesnt have a varible crossover.I heard that you need some kind of chips....is this true??

Can I use and external eletronic crossover?Whats the overall verdict on this amp?Did I get ripped off?

BTW,Im using it to power 2 Polk 6x9's and 2 Polk 6.5's.

Thanks

And yes, the internal crossover is what's called an RNET, it's basically a 14 (or 16) pin resistor network. It's just 7 or 8 resistors. The value of the resistors determines the crossover point. If you need a different crossover point, you need a different RNET. You can build RNETs as long as you find the right parts.

The XS is a solid sturdy amp. Good buy at $75 IMO. A member on this forum (Bfowler) can help answer more as he has a few of the XS amps and he seems to like them.

So instead of using these resistors, would an external crossover work with this amp?

i have a soft spot for those amps. they are sort of a no frills, solid dependable amps. and $75 is a great price for the 4600

the r-nets can be great, it takes any guesswork out of the variable crossover.

here is a little table showing the parts you need for which frequency.
