Pedi - BMW tuning cont' from the Supercharger thread
so before the needed lock i was asking if you had any experience turbocharging or even basic tuning an m52?

Hello my friend.
I have alot of work done on M52s, both b20 and b25 edition.
I did buy myself an M52 b20 for turbo-charging.
In that earlier pictured BMW-convertible (that skeleton
) that is mine, I am going for 600 bhp.
But as I did build, I figured that is was better to go for good'ol cast-iron M50 b25 because of the overload. I changed the bore from 84mm to 86mm, and with a stroked crank I reached just over 2900 ccm (2.9l).
A MLF Cometic 3-layer steel-headgasket and ARP-studs will help me keep the preassure inside the engine.
a few pics:

Head Gasket, 3mm 3-layer MLS Cometic

Pic of my Garret GT42 race-prep turbo, some ignition-parts etc..

another garret pic:

test-fitting the GT42 in a E30 with M50-transplant:

My roots-charger, an Eaton M90 - for revving up my GT42 (Yes, I am going to Hypercharge....)

Any more questions, feel free... BMW is in my heart, just like the good-ol PG MS-series.
And for those who would like to see some more pics of my cab (it is a 1976 BMW 320 Peters cab edition. Aprox 110 made), feel free to look at this forum. It is in Norwegian, but there are some pics - understandable in every language

Ehhh... Maybe I did not answer the question..
Do NOT use the M52 with turbo. Go for cast-iron M50 instead.....

that's a nice looking setup you have planned there Pedi
I have a friend here who intends to put a M3 3.0 euro specs in a E30 and add a turbo to it
that should be done sometimes next year when he is done with his rally clio RS turbo

Heyy! Turbo on the S50 b30 is cool, but infact a stock S50 b32 is really good to go - more reliable and not that expensive... Everything machinework on any M-engines is f**king expensive. Believe me, I have worked on many !!itchnertamatoa wrote:I have a friend here who intends to put a M3 3.0 euro specs in a E30 and add a turbo to it

I am using the MSD with the Haltech E6x..Bfowler wrote:holy hell.....i am so jealous that is a thing of beauty. so you are using a msd stand alone system instead of working within the bmw computer?
No Bosch Motronic or Siemens (BMW original systems...), as they do not handle 400+ HPs...

Yeah, I know. But it is both flow- and race-prepped to make things go faster. But big turbo is needed for high HP-values. I want 600 brake horsepowers at a minimum, so things need to be big.dgoodhue wrote:That is a big turbo for 2.9L
With only turbo, I believe full turbo-pressure achived before 3000 rpm, so therefore Hypercharging (Eaton M90 root-charger...) - to reduce/get rid of turbo-lag.

is it harder one way or another to go turbo VS supercharger?
i definitely want to go FI within the next year or so. I'm not after anything crazy, maybe 260 at the wheels. this is in my daily driver, so I'm thinking supercharger is a better option, but i really really like turbo cars.
any thoughts? seems like the parts aren't too expensive, but the tuning is what is going to rape me.

Most easy is supercharging, and most cheap aswell.Bfowler wrote:is it harder one way or another to go turbo VS supercharger?

Turbo is much more work and many components are affected. I would stay away from turbo, unless you do it properly="expensive"
Hypercharging is not recomended in your case.
Parts are more cheap overseas than here in Norway. IE I did pay 4000 USD for turbo-camshafts and intake/outlet tuning on the head... My guess is that it is more cheap at your place.
So far my engine has cost me way past 15000 USD, but when finished, it'll be good

hyper charging will be amazing....i have no doubt it will be an astonishing beast. and that is for your wagon?
so what will i need as far as fuel/engine management when i add the supercharger. the rest of the gear i am pretty familiar with.
and im sure i will pepper you with more questions as i get closer to pulling this off.

It is for my 3-series cab (E21) yes.
You might need new injectors, adj. FPR, and reprogram ECU. That's it - but ofcourse pending how much HP..
Pepper me as much as you want, no probs...

Nice one!!
Hmmm...
M52 b28...
nice engine.
First of all, replace your choking intake (the 328i intake is identical with 320i) with a euro 325i with "dual" pipes, and get your ECU reprogrammed. Then we are talking aprox 220 HP.
This is also a MUST-HAVE when FI...

I'm assuming you mean intake manifold?
i have read many promising articles about that swap...but i will wait until i get the Supercharger so i only have to get my ecu reprogrammed once.
i already have a dinan intake pipe and software for it.
i have also swapped out the open differential for one from a 98 m3
