Not as technical as I would have liked.

Saying "Better design" isn't the same as showing me exactly WHY it's a better design.

Of course, I don't know much about woofer design, materials or anything else but I was hoping to be educated :(

That's Ben Milne, the owned of ed. Since he is not really an engineer and only knows how to steal others' designs he can't fully explain why his stuff is better, he's just hoping that if he says it enough you will finally believe him.

Even though I don't know much, if anything about woofer design, what he was presenting didn't sound amazing or radically different than other woofers to me. Of course, that could either be my lack of education, the lack of real innovation or a bit of both.

He is doing what any other speaker maker does....trying to sell his speakers. Doesnt matter what he says really.....as long as he sells more speakers. Cant blame him for that.

I really cannot say much about any woofers designed in the past few years, but around 2004 I had up to date knowledge as to what woofers were superior as far as sound quality is concerned. My knowledge was directly from testing countless manufacturer’s products and comparing them to Rockford products at the time, all done while I worked for Rockford.

One woofer which we spent a lot of effort trying to beat was the JL Audio, W6v2. JL clearly spent a ton of effort on the W6v2 design, and they had a winner. The W7 was an OK speaker, but was clearly after additional output, whereas the W6v2 was built to sound good.

I will say this though, in the case of durability, we had the W6v2 easily beat. Our woofers were designed to survive a 24hr non stop power test at full power, and JL products would fall far short of this, usually only lasting a few hours. Just for general knowledge, our record speaker was a Punch XLC which ran for close to 6 months non stop in power test. They finally quit the test prior to its failure, due to needing its spot for another woofer, and yes the XLC sounded like total crap after that extreme of a test, but it did keep going.

Everybody pretty much knows I am not an SPL kind of guy, so with that in mind, if I were in the market for a woofer today, the first I would buy is a JL Audio 12W6v2, or 10W6v2.

My personal next best favorite is the Rockford Fosgate Punch HX2, which is no longer made, but won out almost every single SQ related test we put them through at that time. The MB Quart Premium woofer made 1 or 2 years back is somewhat a Punch HX2 reconfigured. I would trust the Premium woofer to outperform many woofers made today.

I had a Punch HX2 10 and many people mistook it for a 12 in terms of output.
