Need amp repaired in San Diego
Need amp repaired in San Diego
2 quick questions:
1. I have a Route 66 and the M44 section output stage is blown. Recommendations for a good shop in San Diego (preferably North County/Escondido) that can troubleshoot and repair?
2. My plan (if amp can be fixed) is to run components off the M25 section of the Route 66 with input from the high outputs of my 215x and then run one sub each off the M44 section bridged as seperate mono channels from the sub output on the 215x. (Essentially run the M44 section as two bridged mono channels.) Crossover is 24db/octave @ 90hz from 215x - if I set the HP crossover for the front channels on the RT66 at 0 and the sub LP x-over at 175 will this work? Or will it mess up the x-over frequency since it is getting cut at 90 from the 215x and then goes through the internal amp x-over at 175 for the sub output? The "front" channels should be fine acting as a bridged mono LP, it is the sub outputs I'm concerned with as I don't know the physics behind what happens when the signal is run through two active x-overs.

it should be fine and just increase the slope. (not sure how the math works, but more then 24db an octave)
also, one member "onemoreamp" has a shop in the bay area. that's the only semi-local to you shop i know of. he has done work for quite a few of us on the board

Thanks for the x-over info Bfowler. I'm really looking for a local shop so I don't have to ship it off - this amp is in rough shape and the 66 was always a little anemic to begin with. Not my favorite PG amp, but the only one that will fit for the install I have planned.
Thanks - so one sub will simply roll off the high end a little more quickly than the other. My new friend you live within safe shipping distance of PG and there very reasonable repair services located in rainy as hell Oregon. I suggest with your location you please consider them the absolute closest proper repair center for you amp.
They can be contacted by web searching RODIN < their new name. They still gladly service these amps and may have those spacial parts like connectors and such that are rare as hens teeth nowadays.
I also have experience but as far as I am away from you <the SF bay area> you should go the extra 500 miles or so and get it to PG directly. Even I have shipped to them without issue over the years from my local, and they do a pretty OK job of repair work.
I am on Hiatus while I sort out some health issues so PG is the only close , qualified PG tech you will find, other than Doc and he is in Michigan if my memory is on par today.
Welcome aboard, and I hope your amp gets the care its and you deserve as loyal PG fanatics like the rest of us here in our little piece of heaven on the Ethernet.....C

PS there is ONE person near you that has talent and reputation that I can promote without guilt of any kind, and that is Steve Mantz of ZED audio, Simi Valley CA.. He has been in this business as long as I have been so hes a good local bet for you. Here is his info....

Great info 1moreamp; I wasn't sure PG would still work on them. Heck, I wasn't even sure if PG was still in business for a while. I "grew up" in the MS and M series days and when I found PG online recently I was saying "WTF happened to PG?!?! This can't be the same company!" I would like to get this amp fixed properly; I take care of my gear (have a closet full of old PG stuff - like everyone on here it seems) and was floored by the crappy condition of this amp when I got it.
