RSd enclosure size?

hey there..im puttin 2 rsd 12's (svc) in an '06 Sonata (midsizd sadan). anywho... i was wonderin if anyone...ehem...erin...ehem..could help me out with the ole' internal volume of enclosure problem. i read on a review that erin keeling recommended 1.8cu for max sq, but i dont know what kind of vehicle cabin volume that was tested by. well, im goin for the flattest response curve i can get while still stayin the thickest i can. im thinkin about 1.5-1.6cu might be perfect for me in this car. if erin or or another fella with similar experise on this sub can hook me up with some knowledge, that'd be awesome.

i'm not errin, but i have played with quite a few rsd subs.

the smallest you will want to go is 1.2cf each. you will still get a fairly flat curve.

anything between that and 1.8 should rock the hell out of your car

Caraudiomag.com has a review of them, and they used a 1.85ft^3 sealed for testing after they called and talked to PG engineers to get the optimum SQ box for the RSD 12.

Errin Keeling (vw337 on the phorum) is that PG engineer who gave them that size

Well versed yes but carry a engineering cert/degree well yes but not in audio /electronics.

However the 1.8 total spec was in a a GTi and Jetta. this airspace accounts for the sub as well.

I`m an engineer major too, but not in audio/electronics! I`m a jr. at TNTech.

So,I have a question for you Errin: I`m building a box for my RSdC124, I drive a hatchback a lot like the GTI, the box is ported with a net volume of 2.5ft^3 tunned to 23hz. Would you say this will be the optimal SQ box for my car? I can modify the box if needed.

PG recomends a 3" x 11.8". But I graphed that on Winisd and it will have a LOT of port noise! So I am going with a 4" x 21.7", which will be port noise free to about 30hz at 1200w rms according to winisd. I am happy with that! I bought 3 90 deg. elbows to get to the exact size and it works perfect! But the box is not ready yet though. It will be this weekend!

Ummmm well, sadly I did some of the testing on the original RSdC's but have not had a chance to really play with the actual production piece as I am no longer at PG, but from my recollection I would say 23hz is going to be tough in that size box.

The sub itself has a rather rigid motor which lends itself well to small enclosures and allows very little change in response without going to huge enclosures.

I emailed PG and they said that the 2.5ft^3 tunned to 23hz is the optimal SQ box for the RSdC 12's. I think it is a pretty big box. but i built it and I am almost done with it. I graphed the RSdC124 on winisd and it says that the optimal SQ sealed is at 2.3ft^3 (PG recomends 1.17ft^3), which is not far from my 2.5 ported. So i figure i can close the port with something when I want to have it sealed. Also with that same sealed box, adding an eq on winisd at 30hz with a gain of 4db and a Q of 2, will make the respose flat straight on top of the 0db line all the way down to 30hz

! Pretty cool... I know it might not mean the same in real life, but I will give a try with both boxes. I`ll probably make one at 1.17ft^3 sealed and try as well. I will be giving the sub 1200wrms.

I got the box done last night at 9:30! Had to drive back to school. So I only got to listen to it for 2h and I was tired. But, from the 2h driving...omg

! This sub is unique. When it needs to blend with the front stage, it does. When it needs to go unnoticed, yep does that too, and my favorite... when it needs to kick you in the face... it doesnt think twice, it gets low, really low. It is accurate and plays anything you throw at it. I was afraid of the box sounding boomy, but I was wrong and PG was right

. I will listen to it some more, and will write a short review the best I can. By the way, my setup is a SQ setup, so the sub is playing to mix with the front stage. Not a basshead. It gives me headaches
