help identifying wire

Post by davidc81 »

the wire that attaches the motorized cubby lid of my factory navigation system to the main harness snapped. does anyone know what type of wire it is, where i can get a replacement, or if i can get it repaired? is there a part number for it? i went to nissan and they said i have to get the harness for the whole car replaced which is $1200. i've attached some pictures for reference. thanks!

Tom tried to fix one of those wires recently and it was so hard he had to give up... Good luck man, I don't know where to get those.

That broke in the wrong place, didn't it? Anywhere else would have been fine, but noooo!

Unfortunately I can't find anything like that on ebay or google right now.

I would probably recommend finding a scrapyard with a 350z. That's probably your best chance of finding one, assuming they haven't ripped out the nav system already.

wait wait! if you sold your volks...then you would have a working nav system AND good looking rims!

HAHA .. Thats just about any dealerships answer to anything electronic/electrical. Too bad the vehicle harness doesn't include that ribbon cable in the head unit! ... douchbags.

You could put the stock wheels back on and use the proceeds from the volks to get the new cable from the stealership :)

So the wire itself broke?

If that's the case, why don't you just cut off the broken/fried ribbon and splice back together with speaker wire?

theres not enough wire on the broken end to be able to splice it. i've been searching for whats printed on the wire and it seems like they also use it for printers? gosh darn it, this is killing me!

Have you tried asking on a 350z specific forum? Maybe others have had the same problem. :?

Looks like the cable is made by Sumitomo right?

JuddWire is the USA factory for Sumitomo... here is a link to a whole bunch of flat/ribbon style cables they make:

http://www.juddwire.com/page.php?id=52

Perhaps it's worth giving them a call.

Edit: This PDF even lists the same model number (20861) as your cable.

Is it broke in two places or is that black tape factory?

Can you you pry open that ribbon connector?
They had to have it open for the original manufacturing process.
Might be just a couple of release tabs.
Little spikes to penetrate the insulation when snapped closed.
Will your unit still function if that much ribbon cable is "cut out"??
The only stupid question is the one not asked .......
