O Boy... I think I made a mistake

Today I came back from college and found out that my car battery was dead. I used jumper cables to initally jump the car. It worked but then I went to my girlfriends house to drop off the cables but the car battery died as I did not drive around enough with it.

So I hooked it up again, but this time the jumper cables seemed to have fried as a huge spark let out. Maybe I connected it wrong or something. My radio was letting out white smoke as if something had blown up inside of it. The smell was horrible. I figured I had shorted it or something. I put the display back on and it worked but no sound. My tantrum 300 amp's blue light was not turning on. I figured if I got a new deck than it would be all right. I changed the deck but the amp still failed to turn on.

What other things could've happened to the car? I looked at the fuse but I am not completely sure if that went out or not.

Yeah, I've accepted that it has died. I bought a new one already but the amp is not turning on. Could the amp be fried as well?

You know, something similar happend to my car -- howeveri t was the remote wire output on the deck that stopped working ... always put a lil wire from the positive input to the remote input to see if your amp is still good.

Check the fuse on you amp power wire, you blew it.

yeah , my guess is fuse too , I did it late one night too , turned battery around and connected it up , this was after using loads of contact adhesive, so my mind was not with me

80A AGU Fuse is the fuse that I am running right now. I took it out but the middle piece still seems to be in one piece. I will try to replace it and see how it goes.

Do I have to find the exact one to replace it? Or can i get an equalivalent size but different ampage.

you are running the tantrum 300.2 right? you should go lower, that amp will never need an 80 amp fuse.

you should go for one between 30-50amps

so did the new deck work fine and the amp still didnt trun on?

New deck powers on looks great. The amp's blue light will not turn on so I guess thats why the speakers are not powering on. I'll go buy another fuse right now and try it later tonight.

Question about your remote wire (the little blue one that connects to the amp and the radio), make sure it's not severed anywhere. I had that happen to me once.

^thats where i was going with my "new deck works ok" question

if the blue light is not on, it means the amp isnt getting power, which is better then the amp's light being in protect mode, or powering on then popping a fuse

Easy way to bypass the remote wire is to briefly connect power from the + terminal to the remote terminal. Doing this should turn the amp on. You can see if the fuse is intact by simply testing voltage across the + and - terminals with a multimeter. If you are reading 12+, then everything should be fine. In that case if you have 12v to your + and remote terminals, then your amp might be broken!

Or get a meter and check for voltage at the amp. Both the main power as well as the remote lead. If it is severed as Francious70 mentioned, giving it 12 volts on the amp side could get ugly all over again. It's been my expeience that if an amp's fuse blows it is toast on the inside. The amp's fuse is there to protect your car not the amp.

Tantrum's have external fuses - I believe a 30A in a 300.2.
Could be as simple as that.
It did it's job when you connected your jumper cables in reverse.
However, it may have protected the car, not the amp.....

yes, the on-board fuses are the last line of defense of protecting your amp from reverse polarity. and even those sometimes don't save the amp.

Well, I pulled them both out. One side had a blown fuse gotta replace that one and see if it will work. The other fuse for the SPR was fine. The 30A side was blown.

SPR=spare. only the side labeled 30A is actually in a protection circuit. when you replace this fuse does it blow instantly when the amp attempts to power up?

I blew one external fuse on my old kenwood, the amp still worked, so not always the fuse is there to protect the car. I am pretty sure that his car is still good.

to test if your main power wire and fuse are good, use this technique. stand in a puddle, then squeeze ground wire in your teeth, then wet the right (must be right, ie polarity) nipple and touch it with power wire. Believe me you ll know if it is good or not.

Heres an update: I have the exact same amp in my other car. So I took the non working one and put it into the working car setup. The amp powered on fine looks like the fuse protected the amp from breaking.

I used the working amp in my other car and put it in the wrongly charged car and it still did not turn on.

Are there any other fuses that I have not checked?

when you hooked up the new deck, did you hook up the right remote turn on cable (not the power antenna?)

if you swapped out the amp's power wire fuse, thats about all i can think of
