got a problem...please help

Post by capitolj80 »

ok, i just hooked up my old audiobahn 12's and 2 mono amps in my sisters car. Each amp is running at 2ohms. anyways, i get everything done, turn the car off...and the amps are still on. I dont know what to do. Unfortunately, they're wired to the fuse box (couldn't find any access to the engine compartment). I know this can work fine cuz i've done it b4. anyways...the power wires (2- 8awg) are hooked to the 30amp radio fuse and the remote is wired to the 15amp tail lights fuse...i tried different fuses for both but no change. they are each grounded seperately in the trunk also, since she has a stock stereo, im using an rca converter... with the remotes running to an accessory fuse, the amps shouldn't be able to stay on when the car is off SHOULD THEY??

First of all you need to find access to the battery then check your remote somehow it is staying powered up to check just disconnect it and the amp (s) should go off

I'm sorry, but the way you have that wired is a new ghetto for me. That's just an accident w/a place looking for a time to happen. You HAVE TO find a way to that battery. What kind of car is it? There's always a way. Let us help you find it.

Whoah. Whoah. Hold on a sec.

You aren't running your 8 gauge all the way to the battery???? Your power wires need to be run right up to the battery, not to the fuse box. Do NOT tap into stock wiring with aftermarket amplifier power wires. They will NOT handle that current draw! You could start a fire!

Also, your remote lead needs to be taken from the remote output of your headunit, not your tail light fuse. :?

wow...i know im not SUPPOSED to run the power to the fuse box (and i knew id be scolded), but back in the day i ran this same setup for 6 years (between 2 cars) and had no probs...especially not this one. i tried like hell to get access to the engine compartment, just couldn't so i went back to this so i could get it dne for her.

Your stock wiring is probably as thick as your speaker cable. Ask yourself if you really think it can supply the current that two 8 gauge cables can.

I'm very surprised that your car or amp haven't burned up!

well guys...i figured out what to do... i'm gonna tell her to take it to the shop and let those guys get that damn power cable to the battery. they can put the new cd player (coming in a couple of days) in while they're at it to get the remote hooked up there and get rid of that damn rca converter...well, sorry if i seemed ungrateful or resistant, im just very frustrated with this whole project. an s-10, a taurus, an intrepid, 2 mustangs, and an escort in the last year without a hitch..but this fuckin grand prix's got me wantin to eat a goddam bullit. anyways, ill just thank you all 4 your input and go away now b4 i piss everyone off...later dudes

The boot that all the wires run through the fire wall, locate that. Use a coat hanger and poke it through the boot from the outside in. Attach power wire to the end of the hanger and SLOWLY pull the hanger through as someone else gently pushes and guides the wire in the boot.

If that doesn't work get a fire wall gromet ring and make your own hole. It's quit easy. Either way, be careful for factory wires and stay the hell away from anything w/Yellow plugs/tape/loom. It's part of the airbag system.

You're not pissing us off. We just don't want to see something happen to you, the girl or the car. Plain and simple. The truth hurts sometimes, but it's your safety we're concerned about.

thnx green...i know when im in over my head, though :( some cars are pretty easy to get it through the boot, but this one needs to be handled by someone with better resources and ,perhaps, skill than myself. good lookin out

whew....crisis averted.

the reason that was a bad idea is that the wiring running to your fuse box is big enough to supply the car with what it needs at thats about it. even a minimal system will draw at least 40amps on top of that.
