Sumer SOUND OFF
Sumer SOUND OFF
Sumer's apon us and it's time to sound off.
I was thinking about mic'in my civic just for shits and giggles to see what kind of DB's I'm getting at some point this sumer and had an idea. Why not make this a competition?
We all talk about how good our rides sound and how loud it is........PROVE IT............
My thoughts on how to break it up into more specific classes
**SPL**
Single woofer
100-601 total watts
602-1201 total watts
1202 and up
Dual woofer
100-601 total watts
602-1201 total watts
1202 and up
Multiple woofers
100-601 total watts
602-1201 total watts
1202 and up
I've never done SQ myself though so I really don't have a good knowledge on how that works.
I'm sure we'll need to tweek this a bit but I thought it might be fun.
**RULES**
* MUST post pic of system
* Must post PROOF of meter reading. A pic of yer car at the mic works
* MUST keep this fun. Any conduct unbecoming of a phorum member will lead to a disqualification of yer entry.

Those tender little burgers with them little, itty-bitty grilled onions that just explode in ya mouth like flavor crystals every time you bite into one.. just makes me want to burn this muthafuka down.... Come on, Pookie, let's burn this muthafuka down!!!
IASCA comes to Portland atleast once in the sumer. CARTOYS has an annual tent sale that they bring a meter to for anybody that wants to mic their ride. FOR FREE!!!!!! There has to be somewhere close just about everybody here that has a meter. I know that there are 3 places here that have em.

Well .. Judging SQ would be impossible without having the same person judge all cars. It's too subjective even by multiple IASCA judges. That's why at the more important shows there is at least 2 sets of judges and their scores are averaged. Even then you gotta hope you get judges with a good ear. I'll post an official IASCA scoresheet so you can get an idea of the scoring.
SPL would also be difficult without the same meter on everyones cars. Meters will vary from maching to machine. Whether it's a mic used or a pressure switch like the ones now rated for 190db. I've taken readings in the lane with my AC unit only to get a 2-3db difference on the official meter that's the same as mine. Also humidity levels will change readings etc. etc.
I would be willing to offer my meter to do the SPL readings if the contestants would be willing to spend the $ to ship it back and forth from member to member. We could work out the details if thats an option that anyone is interested in doing.
Here's an SQ scoresheet

I guess it really doesn't matter then...... It's not like there's anything but braggin rights on the line here. I though it might be fun..... I'm gonna do it and I'm sure Brian will too. If you compete already then post a copy of yer readings. I understand there will be differences in readings but this is just for fun.......

Sorry. I didn't mean to sound like I was raining on the parade
I guess I meant that would have to be taken into consideration if it's close. I'd be up for it just for fun like you say. And for anyone not able to get to a show, I could send a meter if they're interested in taking part.

A quick google search turned this up. It goes for $100. But only goes to 130db. Seems most of those type have the same 130db limit.

The Audio Control meter, IASCA's official meter, goes for around $1800 nowadays. Self contained. Easily portable.

TermLab, dB Drags official set-up, is a software/hardware system. A single mic/sensor set-up goes around $650. More consistant but requires PC.

I have the Audio Control meter. I'd be willing to loan it out for someone interested in seeing what their system can do. Not only SPL wise but with full RTA this can help tweek anyones system. Shipping weight would be about 20-25lbs or so. You can figure the cost of shipping it back and forth (from PA ZIP 17331) and if it's reasonable we could arrange something.

I can guarantee that I won't be getting an Audio Control meter...
It would be nice to have though...

I'm in!!!.. and I'm in the woods here in Vermont.. no way would a meet be in my immediate area.. if there is a meet it's for tracker pulls, log rolling and cut down trees quick competitions. Would have to have someone/thing shipped and of course willing to pay the shipp costs.. Might have to hook up the MS1000 for this joint though.. nah.. not really though would like to see what the daily driver setup does... 2250 and two 275's All @ 2 ohm. So count me in..... so for fun which makes sense.. too bad we all couldnt thro in like 10/20 bucks and have a pot for winner (1st, 2nd 3rd prize) but then would get potentially messed up... for fun is fun...mh

Kick off from the old days...
I know you guys are going to beat this easily with the stuff that's available nowadays... but back in 1996, this was just plain LOUD.
Note; all measurements on soundoffs were officially done at 10 cm. above the dash, 10cm. from the front windshield.
When measured at home, next to the kickpanels, the reading was much higher [about 7.5- 8 db].
Competing in the amature-class, at the end of that day I won the PRO-class [everything above 1000 watt rms], with my system of only 1000 watts rms.
My oponent WON EVERYTHING back then with a Caliber-Van [24 x 12inch woofers, 5,500 W rms.] UNTIL THAT DAY...
Next contender please!

Thanks Tom.
I still got a few newspapers and the Dutch "panorama" magazine, that wrote an article about the car in those days.
And well... looking at my hair... yep, I was 32
My last opponent that day , like I said, won every SPL contest in most of the European country's.
Every time he showed up at a contest, the armosphere was gone amongst the contenders.
So beating him that day, was one of the best moments in my life.
[and now you know why I still treasure my MS-amps]
That day the huge crowd went nuts, and the best part was I got a special reward from the new "miss Belgium"...
