Hello, congratullations for this fantastic site. I'm from Venezuela, so, I appologize for my bad english. I've read almost every post hear in order to understand, as much as I could, all the related issues to car audio.
So, PG is not a commercial brand hear in Venezuela, you could easily get some RF, Kicker, JL, Pioneer, Sony, Boss, Lanzar (not optidrive), Quantum Audio, DB Drive, Crossfire, and ocasionally MB Quart or Polk (low series). Fortunatedly, I get a Xenon 1200.1 amp, I loved it, and buy on ebay a Xenon 200.4 and 2 sets of X5 components. Also bought locally 2 Massive Audio RW 12" (not very SQ) before I knew a thing about car audio.
After all my research on this site, I realize that I won't be able to obtain the result I'm looking for, due it will be a lack of power between 70 - 120Hz.
I own a Renault Megan (sedan like Dodge Neon or Honda Civic) and the original sepeakers are 5 1/4".
Therefore, I would like your advice or suggestions in order to improve the SQ.
I'm thinking to replace the subs, and I would like to keep the comps, due they are very smooth and clear. A few days ago, I saw in a local store the Xenon 12D2 sub, but I didn't buy it inmediatly because I read hear that this sub will play very low and my intention is to complete the system using the X5 comps, so I was thinking on a 10" sub. Also, I saw a Oz Audio ME 10" D4 (700rms) and thought that if I conected at 8ohm to the X1200.1 amplifier it could work fine.
Other options avilable localy are:
JL Audio all
Kicker all
Crossfire all
JBL GTO series
DUB some
Audiobahn some
Quantum Audio all
DB Drive all
Oz Audio ME 10"
Phoenix Gold Xenon 12D2
Pioneer all
Sony all
Lanzar Max
Powerbass all... and maybe other brands (CV V-max) but not easily
I would highly appreciate your support and/or suggestions.
Best regards,
Emiliano
PG Xenon - setup instalation problems
Hey Emiliano, welcome to the Phorum!
Yes, the X5's do have a problem creating midbass. That was their one problem, because the Xenon subwoofers play VERY deep, and also cannot handle midbass well. This means most full Xenon systems had a large midbass gap, exactly where you found yours!
This is why the PG RSD components now produce MUCH more midbass... they still sound as silky smooth as the Xenons on treble, though I do think the Xenons sounded a bit clearer in midrange. If you can get RSD components there, a set of 5.25's would probably close your gap quite a bit.
Also to improve your midbass, it is very important to do sound treatments on your doors! Do a few layers of deadening inside and out, and you will absolutely transform the way they sound.
As for subwoofers... An RSD 10, or RSD competition 10/12 would be perfect for your setups. All three of those have really tight upper bass, and blend extremely well, while still being able to play lots of low end. If those subs aren't available in your area, I would recommend ones like the JBL GTO or JL W6.
