More Power questions

Post by Stereo Junkie »

Okay so my roommate and I were discussing how to get the power I will need for my "complete" system when installed.
Going by the specifications I would need ~500A of power on a continuous basis. Now I only have my little S-10 4cyclinder 100A alternator currently with 1/0 between optimal yellow under the hood and two kinetik HC1800 in parallel in the back.
So my though was to do what the T15kW is doing by building my own capacitor bank with Nesscap 2.7V 360F capacitors (six in series by 20 in parallel or 120 of the buggers).
After reading all the material on the T15kW we concluded that it is just an A/B class amp that has a huge capacitor bank (it uses Nesscap 2.7V 400F caps or 180 of the monsters).
After arguing until 1:30 am my roommate said that is basically what I was already doing with the kinetik batteries and if I followed the same principals all I would have to do is upgrade my existing alternator to a ~200 A one. 100 for the stereo and 100 for the truck.
Any thoughts or arguments?

Thanks,

Since you're needing 500A continuously, are you just doing burps?? if so, you're current setup should be sufficient. Maybe an extra kinetic battery or two, but you shouldn't need more than that

But your roommate is correct about your kinetic batteries acting as caps, because they are.

Now if you're wanting to run the system continuously (listening to music) then it's not going to pull 500A continuously and the setup you have should be sufficient.

500 amps??? You gotta be kidding me. You're not listening to test tones at full volume are you?

Get yourself an alt from Wrangler NW. With ample power wiring and your batteries, that should be more than sufficient.

stipud,
sadly enough , yes  , but not all the time.

I just liked the concept of the T15kw as they basicly don't have to update the alternators in vechiles that use it. I was looking for a cool way to not take a mpg hit on the old S-10.

Thanks for the replies so far and keep them comming.

I can't verify this with experience but I don't believe a large capacitor bank is really going to be effective for 500A continuous draw if you don't have a 500A source. Now if you're talking "burps" as was mentioned... then sure, depending on the length of said burps and the size of the capacitor bank and how fast it can discharge.

If you remove your air conditoning compressor you may be able to pop another alternator under the hood where the compressor once was. Then buy (2) 250 amp alts. I dont know if this is feasable but hey I seen 4 alts in a van like mine before  I havent had a look under the hood of a s10 for awhile , might not help with the MPG but who cares if you have a sweet sound system 8)
