2001 Taurus install

Post by fordtough1 »

This is my daily driver, so work on it will be a little slow, but I will keep you guys posted as I do stuff.

I wasn't planning on starting this install so soon, but a chain of events forced my hand. My wife needed a new headunit in her van, and I was getting a new one for my car anyway, so I gave her my old one. In the meantime my son got sick in the car on the ride home from grandma's house, so I had to clean the carpet in the car. I decided that since I had to lift the carpet to run wires and so forth I would go ahead and just pull it all the way out and clean the 131,000 miles of accumulated dirt out of it. While it was out I ran my wiring.

I know it's not near as clean as alot of you guys wiring jobs, but I did the best I could with what I had to work with. I couldn't afford techflex at this time. Also sorry about the crappy pics, I took them mostly for my reference so if I needed to remember where things were in the future I could.

I'm using 1/0 KnuKoncepts Kolossus power and ground cable all the way front to back, and their Krystal rca cables. I'm putting an auxilary fuse panel in the back to power all the audio stuff, I'd like to use a DD5, but again money is too tight. The other wires are power for the TLD 66, basscube remote wire, LPL wire, and speaker wires also KnuKoncepts.

I hope to start building the amp rack this week. I'm using an x1200.1 to power 2 RSD 12's, and an x200.2 to power the RSD 6.5's

I'll post more pics when I get some more done. Like I say this is my daily driver so it will be a slow process, but I need to get it done soon, driving to work without tunes is killing me.

I can't help but notice that the carpet is pulled out yet the seats are still installed... did you put the seats back in after pulling the carpet or can you pull the carpet with the seats installed in that car?

Naw, I pulled the carpet last weekend, and washed and had it out all week to dry, I just stuck the 2 front seats back in it so I could drive it.

I took the pics before I had taken them back out to reinstall the carpet.

Ok, I finally got done with all of my chores and got to work on the amprack and box this week.

here is the beginning of the amprack

Here it is put together with the shelves for the amps.

This is where the amprack will be in the car when it is finished

this picture shows the beginnings of the box, and where the fuse block and accesory fuse panel are located. They will be hidden when I get all of the panels back in the trunk.

That's all I got for now. I'll post up more when I get a chance to work on it again

I wanted one of those for a long time, then I got the opportunity last year. I was building a playstructure/swingset for the kids, and my old benchtop saw just wasn't working for ripping 2x6's. Long story short I told the wife if she wanted the kids to be happy I would just have to buy a new table saw.

So all three of her "kids" ended up happy.

Seriously though if you ever are in the market for good power tools, I highly recommend Rigid brand that you get a Home Depot. I have the table saw, a shop vac, a drill and a sander in the Rigid brand. They are some of the best power tools I have ever used.

This week I've been working on the doors. I've wanted to hear the RSD components in well deadened doors ever since I got them. Soon I will have the chance. I used 2 layers on the outer skin of the door, and 2 more layers on the inside skin. There are no rattles or buzzes when you rap it with your fist at all. You can see where the crossover is mounted, and the baffles I had to make to bring the mid out closer to the door panel.

Oh, and a word about the sound deadening I used. It is rattletrap by Fatmat. This stuff is nice and thick, and sticky, well priced. The only downfall I see to it is that it stinks to high heaven. Hopefully the smell will go away soon.....

Ok, it's mostly done. I think it turned out decent. Nothing fancy, but I like it.

Here is the finished amprack with the amps installed and wired.

Another view

The sub box. I still plan on making a trim panel to cover the whole front of this.

The door panel showing the tweeter location

the linedriver mounted in the glovebox

The headunit and lpl and basscube knobs. I plan on getting a factory floor console for the car and moving the knobs down to it when I do, so they are mounted kinda temporary right now.

I like how all your amp controls are very accessible when you pull the seats back and how the wiring is clean because it tucks right under. Nice job.

How do you like the RSd subs?

I love the RSD subs. I've used them for a year or so on and off while getting this set up.

The amps are actually sitting up about an inch off of the amprack on some rubber isolators. They are air cleaner mounts for a Mercedes or something like that. I saw them in a parts catalog at work and thought they might work nicely to mount amps on.

Meh, I never haul anything in the trunk anyway. Might as well put the space to good use.
