System troubles...

Post by Ahsmo »

I have a bunch of free time on my hands right now so I figured I would try to figure out what is going on with my system.

The problem:

I have a slight audiable high pitched ring in my system. The frequency does not change with the speed of the engine so it is not my alternator.

Probable Causes:

Bad grounds? Heat unit or amp?

Anyone have any ideas?

Can you describe the problem a little more?

High pitched ring? is it constant, just at certain times or what?
How long has this been going on?
Do you know of anything that has changed with your car since this has started?

The Eclipse Deck turns my amps on and off (really fast) everytime I switch CDs. This makes the 1200.1 flip out and stay off. As a result, I put in a switch so I can turn my amps on and off as I choose.

If I leave the switch on and turn off the car the amps make all kinds alien space craft noises for some reason. Not sure if that is related to the ringing issue but...

I turn the car on. Switch on my amps with my toggle switch. Immediately, a ringing starts. It is constant and relatively low. I can hear it when I am cruising. If I turn up the volume on the deck, the ringing does not get any louder.

Its been like this for a while, I just finally have some time to mess with it.

Sounds like a DD5 is in order for the turn on/off problem.

Pix of the wiring?

Sounds like your alien spacecraft sounds are from the Transformer inside your amp squeeling. A friend of mine's X400.1 has that same problem. Apparently it's a common issue as I've seen that around the net before.

But no idea on your other problem, sorry.

Then you might look into a relay or 2 for the cure. I don't know which but I'm sure somebody around here knows.

Yeah, switching on my amps really doesn't bother me. But the god damn high pitched whine sure does.

Im going to try switching to my MS amp.

If the alien noises go away, then the Xenon is going back to PG for the 4th time. If the whine doesn't go away, then I am going to try moving my grounds around.

can anyone explain this too me?
3. With the RCA ends near the signal source use a metal object to short the outside contact to the inside contact of the inputs to the amp. No noise, proceed to the next step; Noise, proceed to 11.

Stuff a wire into the amp's RCA input, then touch it to the shield of your RCA

My take on this is slightly different.....

The 'signal source' is your headunit. SO, unplug the rca's from the rear of the deck and short from the center pin to the outer shield with your deck and amps turned on. Because your rca's are still running along the car to your amps, if you short out the pins, it should tell you if your noise problem is associated with an induction problem in you rca's.

Sounds like "Hetrodyne" noise to me. Multiple switching DC supplies swtiching frequencies "beating against each other.

Rare now a days, but not uncommon back then. Bascially the power supply has issues, and nothing external should be able to fix it. Try an different external source (like an IPOd hooked up thru the headphone output using a stereo 3.5 mm plug to stereo RCA's)

If this fixes it then there is some issue with the cables and headunit.

Move the headunit a foot away from the amp, connect it an see if it goes away? If so a PLD may help. Way lower output source impedance and much higher gain (voltage) than any head unit.

Try any of those things and see what happens, then write in here again.

I'll be here :)
