Project Maxima, Part II

Post by Bfowler »

the original: http://phoenixphorum.com/project-maxima-vt3086.html

it was nice, but for my brothers graduation, felt like he needed an upgrade.

first things first, new amps:

i found a killer deal on a BNIB xenon 100.2 and snagged a xenon 600.1 from the F&F sale

they are hot on their own...but i wanted something different.

i took out the gear-driver and pulled off their cases and end caps.

this shaved off about 6 inches from the total length. the grand plan was to mount them up end to end. i was worried about heat dissipation

i consulted cecil about this and he confirmed by worry. the on board fans would work against each other and create a pocket of air in between them trapped in the inner heat sink.

the idea almost died...but necessity is the bearer of innovation.

this sunday with a Huge hand from Errin, the dream came alive

i give you the maxima's new amp rack (its still got cosmetics to be done...so you will just have to be patent)

Then we built chambers for fans, and sprayed some flat black, just in case any seams were visible later. the out side edge was attached around the rack so we could mount 1/4 plexi on the inside seam, then attach a trim piece on top later

I likey......... I likey alot Brian......

Looks good. How are you fixing the issue with the "dead zone" air flow? Did you reverse the fan on one of the amps? Can that be done??????

we fixed it with the fans on the outside, ones intake and ones exhaust. the air flows under AND through the heat sink, so now the fan on the right blows ALL the air to the left, and the on board xenon fans have all their air blown to the left. the far left fan exhausts all of the air.

Yeah... it had the same amps that he was supposed to sell to Mando, Cecil and Casey.

Sadly, his pics are gone...

Since I'm stealing yer idea for the WRX  , is it possible to switch the direction of the onboard fan? Just switching around the +/- on 1 amp should do the trick. I know that it would have to coinside with the flow of the other fans to maximize the cooling inside the coffin.

it should be, they have no diodes.

but if you switch the flow of 1 fan i think it would just move the dead zones to the outside half of the heat sink.

you can leave a 1" or so gap between the 2 also which would solve everything also

That looks great. That would look good behind the rear seat in my truck. What say you let me barrow it for a while to see    .

sweet idea. luv the look of the xenon boards w/out their cosmetic covers-(almost blue, if i remember?), nice and clean, also, like the idea with the fans; think it should work perfect!!!

no problem....for the low price of $400 we can work out a long term rental :)

but i agree...a smiler set up across the back would work out damn good

Very Nice!

Why is it raised? Something going underneath? Or just room for wiring?

Speaking of wiring....... How do ya plan to hide the octopuss tenticles??? Are ya planing to fab a face panel that is the full size of the trunk left to right / top to bottom? That would also provide security from little thevin bastards that need their hands cut off.

If ya did that, you could "window" a cap and distro block into 1 side. :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

in the higher pictures you can see the unpainted lip around the frame. that is for the trim peices to attach too.

the cap might be a good idea, but for now the dist blocks aren't going anyware.

you will just have to wait to see how it comes out :)
