Thank you for that. Mounting depth is about 3". So how much breathing room do I need to leave past that 3" mark for them to perform best?

K, got my comps in the mail, look great.

If I go this sealed route(poster tube), how much breathing room do I need to leave past the comps mounting depth for them to sound the way they should?

Also, I see that behind my speaker opening, there is a plasticky barrier...perhaps to keep some road noise out or moisture. Bad idea to cut into this? Should I just build out of the opening? I definitely don't have 3" behind the speaker before I hit that barrier.

The "plasticky barrier" is it just a layer of something similar to a garbage bag? If so can you just cut around were you need to?

Yeah it is a little thicker than a garbage bag but I just wasn't sure if I should be worried about cutting through it. I don't know what it's keeping from getting in my car haha.

Just cut out what you need and leave the rest. I did the same to my doors. I believe it's for moisture, but if your only cutting out a 6" or so diameter, I don't see what harm it would do. Does this answer your question you have?

Now that I think about it I pulled it all out. I didn't seal my mids in my doors, but I covered all the big holes with galvanized tin and then put a piece of deadener over the tin to at least seal all the big openings in my doors.

Note: I would like to eventually seal my mids in the door somehow.

Yeah for me it will be easier to just seal the mid into a poster tube pod, I am hoping those mids don't shake the doors too bad cuz I am trying to avoid taking the panels off.

My other car has the doors all dynamatted inside with all the big holes in the sheet metal covered up.

How deep beyond the 3" mounting depth of the mid should I make the pod to give it breathing room?

Wait until tomorrow, or rather later today somebody will know. Sorry I don't know myself. When you take the plastic off, just make sure and leave covered what looks like it may need to be protected.

Somebody help us out here!?

You sir have run into what is called a moisture barrier, you can cut it no worries. However I would suggest cutting just enough to do what you need to do and seal the opening again with duct tape or even some additional plastic.

Yeah I figured that's what it was but how deep should I go with my poster tube? Mounting depth is 3", how much deeper do I need to let the mid breath?

a half inch is enough, but go as far as you can.

Anyone know where I can actually get cardboard tubing in a 5.5" to 6" diameter?

I checked almost everywhere I could think of, crafts stores, fedex/kinkos, art supplies, office stores, lowes home improvement, post office...and got nothing...has anyone actually seen this large of tubing at a po? Maybe i need to ck a diff location.

One guy told me to find a drafting supplies store but I don't know if there is one around me...anyone have a drafting supply store near them that could get me some 5.5" tubing to house my RSd mids?

You could use PVC if you can't find cardboard. Should be something big enough at any hardware store.

I installed the foam and it didn't sound any better. the foam does vent in/out a little, but zero difference. Like bdubs indicated, the enclosure way too small for a 6' mid.

But if you must, you could tape off the foam and fiberglass over that, and use that mold for an enclosure and trash the foam.

Good to know, I was thinking about that but ur right they probably aren't deep enough.

As far as using PVC, I did check out guttering and only found one type of 6" piece at Lowes but it may work, I will check it out again to see, I am a little worried about this metal bracing right beyong the speaker mounting hole, I think it may block a full 6" from being inserted in the door but again I will check it all out very soon.

You can always get an object which is the diameter you need, then procure some contractors paper (roll of brown paper bag material) then cover it lightly with wood glue (use a brush or a roller), then roll the paper around itself creating a tube.

I suggest this over the PVC option since PVC has a different resonant peak which is more into the mid range of your audio spectrum whereas wood/paper is really low on the resonance scale and will add less coloration.
