2 JL 12W6s and 2 12W4s?
2 JL 12W6s and 2 12W4s?
So, Im wanting to run 2 W6 AEs and w W4s... they are similar speakers, but the W4s are 4 ohm DVC and take 200 rms, and the W6s are obviously 6 ohm and take 300 rms.
I'd like to know if I can run one W4 in the box per chamber and one !6 upside down mounted to the outside of the box out of phase in a push pull fashion... I know this is usually better done with an identical speaker, but would it work with different speakers? If not, would it sound good to run one set in a ported box and one in a sealed box? If so, which would sound better ported? I assume the W4s, but I honestly don't know.
I dont have to run em in the same car, but I think it would be cool to run off different amps with different gains...

i can't think two different speakers would work well, too many variables. if the cut out holes are the same its worth giving a try.
so these are the first gen w6's? i honestly don't know a whole bunch about the w4

Hmmm....not to sure, how it would sound personally, but they may cancel each other out in different ways. So doing so may not get you the best sound. Only real way to test is to try it. I have a set of 9's in my doors (PG TI 9's...) a cyclone, and a Fi BTL 12" loaded, and I believe the way I have them crossovered and such, I am not getting any cancellation or very minimal. Anyway that being said if you can change the crossover points for your subs, that might be the BEST way to make sure you have the least amount of cancellation. But I am no guru here, just thinking out loud.
jl
I would not they are similar but not the same
shit you still have w4's I haven't seen them for years
the w4 don't have the same Xmax as the they will just cancel each other
W4 10.2mm 88.2db box 1.25 sealed
w6 11.1 mm 86.9db box 1.25 sealed
I tried the same thing with the w3v1 and v2 they are almost the same speaker but it didn't work

So same question, one old style 12W6 and 2 12W4s... lol The 12W4 is near identical to the old 12W6, just takes 100 watts less... same mounting, same speaker cabinet, even look same, just take 100 less watts to make em loud.

Re: jl
good to know, i'll just do the 2 12W4s at 8 ohm stereo off a 2250... should be a clean as hell 150-200 watts to em, and thats their RMS rating. if its not loud enough, ill do a ported box.mikelycka wrote:I would not they are similar but not the same

Yea I found these W4s on the bay, originals in the box! who knows how long the foam will last, but the pics made em look nice. I had friends with 10W4s in HS and they were f-in LOUD.

set up
I went to jl web site for that info
they has it all in the disco sub section
the w4 are close not not 100% the same
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs ... page_id=15
you have to remember the w6 were jl's flagship
I would order a new foam kit for sure
when I sold jl I have seen jl 10w1 back in the day come out of the box being 1-3/4 of a year old with foam problems
I know the new foam is made better and the cemical they use now will not eat the foam like the old stuff
good luck and nice find
funny I have a 10w7 in ho box 2 10w3v2 first style and a 15w0 just sitting for the next set up
I just put the 10w7 in my wife mk3 golf with the boston pro 6.5 and a jl 500/1 and 300/4 with a clarion mc955 deck very loud clean and she is happy with it
I just could not give her my focal 6.5 165kps mid and tweeter
as my new car only have shallow 4"
love her but f_ck that!!!!

I just figured if they were on different amps at different gains i could blend em.
The 12W6AE is toast, so only one is good... I really wanted 2 of em. If anyone knows anyone with one or 2 AEs only, dont want non matching speakers, I'd love to buy em.

Seriously, Im planning to run 2 12W7s with a 1200.1 on each. That was the plan from the start and it should hit loud and drop low I think. The W6s will be put in to test out, but I doubt I like it as much as even one W7.

The W7 is a nice sub, but a bit overrated. I hope you didnt spend toooo much money for one. To be honest they cost a lot...and there are many others out there that do as much if not better for the price. IE: Fi BTL, and even the Fi Q. The Fi Q is a better sounding sub than the W7.
Believe me..... I've owned a w7, and have a Fi BTL, and actually have owned a w6v2. Also a RE XXX. The w7 is nowhere near the BTL, and the Q IMO is actually quite on par with the w7 in SPL.. The W7 might have the SPL part beat, but SQ....hands down the Q is better.
Anyway trying to down the JL, it's a great sub but way over priced for what you get.

I paid $375 plus ship, and I have a local dealer that told me $500 out the door when I want another one... I have never heard a sub drop like a W7 and get the hell down with as fast a recovery time. It can play rap to jazz without missing a beat... The box has to be perfect, and you need a piss load of power, both of which I am ok with.Wakeup wrote:The W7 is a nice sub, but a bit overrated. ya for the price, I'd suggest the Fi BTL. It's 364 shipped. And wanks on the w7 all day long. Especially in SPL. Grant it the W7 sounds better if you are going SQ. But the BTL still isn't bad. I had the pleasure of hearing to Fi Q's...and let me tell ya, those Fi Q's SLAM pretty hard to do sound MUCH better than the W7. So you could go to Q's, and be louder and sound better or one Q...(havent heard one by itself...) and probably be close to as loud/spl but still sound better doing it.STROKD wrote:I paid $375 plus ship, and I have a local dealer that told me $500 out the door when I want another one... I snagged 2 JLW3 only 3 months old in a sealed 3/4 mdf down firing box for 100 bucks. I figured that I could give them a try for that. The guy I purchased them from told me that they sound better than the old W6 versions. It's been years since I have heard any JL subs, but in the 90's just about every time I heard a car sub set up that I liked it was JL.
I have a single RSDC102 and love it, but would try out the W7 if price wasn't so crazy.

My W4s were mis matched so I am returning... I have a single 12W6 AE I would sell since I don't have a matched pair anymore. I have $138 in it, would sell for near that to get it out of house.buckster wrote:I snagged 2 JLW3 only 3 months old in a sealed 3/4 mdf down firing box for 100 bucks.
