Why would high end spl subs use alum coils if they weren't as good as copper? When I have competitors telling me that the alum coils can take much more power, and the owner aswell, I would believe it... Everyone I talked to is pretty honest. But to fully understand it, I will email dj from audioque, and maybe he can break it down for us. Every major spl sub uses alum coils... So something is up... I will let you know what he says

Stipud, I sold my 200.4. It was simply to big. Loved it, tons of power, but the dam thing took up most of my back shelf.. Right now I am using my m44... As for what amp will I go with, that remains to be seen..

I asked dj the onwer of aq/ Dad of onwer of Digital designs about the coils, and this is what he said.

With the aluminum coil HDC's there is more surface area on the coil to
dissipate the heat( the coil has 8 layers of wire, the copper coil has 4
)plus the suspension package on the aluminum coils will handle more
power. It has six spiders laminated together and is hand built in our
shop with our own glue. This suspension package will handle considerably
more power then the copper coil version. The coils and spiders are
American made and hand assembled. The whole sub is optimized for
competition.

For easy math
4 layers of copper = 10 grams
4 layers of Aluminum = 5 grams

So for equal weight
8 layers of Aluminum = 10 grams

Therefore giving you more surface area. In that manner I can see. Why it didn't cross my mind before ?????

It passed me too  Same weight, much more area to disapate heat.. Makes sense.. Cant wait to get the recone. I will have to wait 7 days or so for it to be built, as they hand build the aluminum recones.

Yup, it makes a lot more sense. If they are using twice the material, it is a gain. If memory serves, copper is only about a 30% better conductor than aluminum. I guess I assumed that it was a like for like coil, just different material.

Later,

About fuckin time Mac.
Well, when I first tried to get this thing, I had just graduated highschool, and was saving to buy a car. Then since they sold out of them, I had no way to get it. :)

Price doesnt matter here, all that matters is I finally got it coming.. Now I got to get my recone for my 18, so I can recone it to a d2 ohm alum coil, then get another 18, so I can run them at 1 ohm... 2500+ watts each 18. Should be deadly

Here is what the box drawings look like.. I will more than likely put the subs on top, but here is how it comes out.. I would like more port area, but the subs needed to get some decent airspace, as 2 18s take up alot of space, and having a trunk car limits youre space aswell.

9.3 cubic ft @ 38hz with 115" of port
Yes the tunning is high, but dd/aq woofers like high tuned boxes. They still smash the lows easy.
