I went to the local car audio store (Sound Check) tonight just to hang out and whilst I was there one of the guys I haven't seen for a while was there w/his car, a Honda CRX, w/2 15" versions of my subs (TREO SSi) in a 6 ft^3 box tuned to 35 Hz off of 1500 wrms total.
I listened to it for about 10 minutes w/all kinds of music and it hit the piss out of me and sounded VERY tight and clean. Sort of like mine, but w/more output. So now I find myself on WinISD looking at the differfences between my box (3 ft^3 sealed) off of the ZPA0.5 at 2 ohms, vs my 3 ft^3 box ported tuned to 35 Hz and it was a gain of 7 dB. 115 sealed, 122 ported. W/a cabin gain of 15 dB at 42 Hz.
We TL'ed his car (139.9 dB) and my truck (130.1 dB) at 42 Hz for me being the most output. What his Hz was I didn't see. I'm after a mixture, if you will, of 90% SQ, 10% SPL. I was amazed at how his box sounded.
Now I know his car is a hatch and it lends itself to higher output, but my truck, even being an ext cab, has a small cabin space making for decent output. I like the way my curve looked ported. It was just over his in the same exact manner. Peaks and the like were the same. So???? What Should I do?
That's what I'm asking myself now. It wouldn't be hard for me to port my box at all, but to seal it again if I didn't like it would look stupid though you wouldn't see it.
Your thoughts.
What to do, what to do?

most box need to be bigger sqft when ported you can cut a hole and take the subs out to fill it but if anything (wood is in the box) the size will be a little smaller
If you good you could cut the hole add the ports if you didn't like it (I think you will not as the box will not made made for ported) you could keep the same piece of wood you cut out and fiber glass over it not lossing any room
I think it is allot of work and you will not like it
just built the right size of box for them
my 2c
also I owned a 1987 crx and I had the 2 12"old kicker c12 the first ones with a alpine v12 mrvt500 the box built in the car it was so loud and clean I think the shape of the car helps more than you think
Also had a 1968 beetle the best sound I ever got out of the car as the bass seems to always hit your seat the same time the mids did

i used to not like ported, but when i got my diamond audio subs they seemed, in my opinion, much better ported than sealed, ive since switched to the pg rsdc 10s, and i built a new box for them , ported, running off a rsd1200.1 @ 2ohms-with the lpl it seems i can have both worlds b/c i can turn down the lpl to blend more with the midbass(sq), or i can turn it up to get more spl, plus i tuned the mono amp at 52 acv, using the dmm , 52.91 sqrt(2*1400), if u got the time, why not build a different box, then if u dont like, u can switch them up?
as she walked out the door she expressed, 'enjoy your amp addiction'
I would build a new box, but due to it's complex shape it'd take to long. It took me 1 month just to build the one I have now and I'm still not done w/it. It needs some finishing touches. Final paint coat, route the edges, make new grilles. Plus the box is already as big as I can fit at 3 ft^3.
Every bit of the box has to go under the rear bench seat. I have 3 kids so the backseat is a must.

Have you considered using just one sub and trying a quick ported box? Building and testing is part of the fun, if you have the time and work space to do it of course. MDF is cheap. Or another option is to get some polyfill and see how it will effect your over all sound and output.

i like that idea... I have never had / gone ported... I always felt that sealed with the RF's, PG's, & JL's I've ever had were always pretty good sealed... would love to rty ported and some expirimentation(s), but not enuff timestipud wrote:I've always wanted to try this... make a 12" MDF disk, and put a port inside of that. Then you can pull the second sub, and install the ported "blank" in its place.

I've ran one 12" ported for the past year and wanted a second, so I know what one 12" will do. When I made the box I'm using now I only had one 12" and did as you said Tom and put a port in the disc that I made to go over it.
Wayne from TREO got back w/me. He suggested using two 3" round ports both 7.5" long. Said that that would be the best sound for the size of box w/two 12"s and minimal port noise. Tuned to 38 Hz he said.
I think I'll go for it. I like the other idea about keeping what I cut out and glassing it back in if I don't like it.
