please help!

Post by oldskoolmseriesfan »

Today I swapped my peice of crap Ultimate amp out, and installed my M50 in its place. all I did was unhooked the one and installed the M50. First off, I have alternator whine :x As I think of it Im sure I can fix that issue. Second, I have a turn on pop (slight but still a pop) and thirdly I need to turn the gain up from 3/4 - full to get any decent volume out of it, and still not even close to the power I expected and know it has. The caps were replaced by Randy, so that is not an issue. The Ultimate amp that was in bfore had way more balls.... AND THAT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG.

Please help, Im very frustrated at the moment.

thanks guys,Dean

hmmm....have you tried installing the old amp back to see if the problems are still evident...? (just asking!) At least if you do this you can narrow it down to the m50....having issues or something....

How's the wiring looking like? are you running anything else in between or any line drivers, xovers, or EQ's...etc?

Have you installed the EQ yet ?

Using it's line driver feature ?

The pop on has to be coming from a ground along with the alternator wine

I would also suggest using the delayed remote turn on coming off the EQ going to the amp

I dont have the cables or the money for cables at the moment so I have not hooked the eq up :( As for xovers Im just running the passives. The biggest issue Im worried about is the gain potentionometer, having to crank it to get half decent power. Even with all the alternator whine at the moment............the SQ is    MINT!

Line Driver's make all the difference when it comes to that gain knob...what cables do you need to make it work ?

Im just remembering back in the day, with my 1st M50, I never had a line driver, and the gain was barely 1/2 way  and my mids rocked. I just need a short length of RCA's really. I think Ive got enough other 4gwg kicking around. I also dont have any dblocks  with 2 amps and a cap  Its a real nasty rats nest which I am quite  about.

I can solve this man's RCA and D-block problems unless someone who lives closer can hook him up

Do you have a DMM? If you do, get some readings from the RCAs and then the amp. Should lead you to understand if the issue is the signal entering the amp or the amp itself.

I would start with the wire going to the alternator, and the grounds that go to the battery under the hood.....if you haven't run new wires for your radio, I would do that as well.

I think the first thing you should do. Is install that EQ even if only for a minute and check to see if you have a difference on that gain knob.....we need to hammer that out first

I have never done the BIG 3, and a little hesitant to do it. 4 gwg is the proper wire for this, correct?

D-block on your ground would solve your noise. I had the same thing happening to me. Sometimes you even have to ground your deck in the same spot. I would also like to think a line driver would help you. I have a tld-22 im not using. Dont think it would cost much to ship.

It is always best to go as big as you can, I did mine in 4 back when I had my 2 xs2300's and since I took one out and put in a x1200.1 I havent redone it :? but its doing fine. If you arent a bass head then 4 works great.
