first off, you shouldn't be playing them without the box. they are tough subs, but they wouldn't take abuse like that for too long. when you do get a box, you will want it to be right at .6cf. it can be about .1 +or-, but .6 is idea. if you have to make it smaller, you can glue pieces of wood inside the box to take up space.

you can use either foam or cotton, but if the box is the right size, it isn't really necessary. it is used to deaden internal waves.

if you use foam, just put a layer on the back wall. if you use cotton/poly fill, just put a loose pile into the box

Very true. The more square the box is, the more the back wave is going to hit the back of the cone causing resonance. But on a boat, that's really not going to make a difference.

thanks for the help on my situation, also thier is one mroe thing.

i know i am going to add a box and on a boat i know its going to be diffrent but whould the box help to project my bass out more or should i port it, or maybe i should just stick with a plain sealed box?

and it might be hard with space but i dont know i want some opinions if you can understand were my pic of the behind the sub...

yes. the idea of the box is to sperate the front wave from the back. even just a sealed box will give you tremedious gains. you might have to go with some fiberglass to make it fit where you pictured though
