Free and not so free RTA

Post by smgreen20 »

I found this at the DIYaudio site. I just might be getting the 1/3 octave version soon. The one octave is free and took literaly 1 minute to download AND install the whole thing.

My laptop has a mic built in so I didn't have to buy one. Going to rudely RTA my stereo this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes/sounds.

Link to the freeware.

"ZPA's will have the same sound essentially as you get from the MS, they just feature a bigger shinier set of balls."

Don't forget you still need a good microphone to take advantage of RTA software. Don't use a cheap mike, or you'll end up doing more harm than good!

That's a bit of an oxymoron. My experience is, no matter what kind of mic you're looking for, budget mics just aren't great.

RTA mics need flat response across the board. There are some behringer mics that are on the cheaper side of things but probably aren't quite as flat as you'd want for judging systems. Tom has one, maybe he can compare it to the Alpine RTA mic.

Behringer ECM8000... It's what I previously used to do my RTA work. However, it requires phantom power, so I was using a mixing board to run it. There are smaller cheaper phantom power supplies you can use as well.

I use the 1/3 octave and love it. works well with the DEQ settings as well.

ECM8000 is coming over from the states for me just as soon as I can set it up and quit buying other stuff instead. Crazy: it's half the european price in the US.....but B&H has toooo many tempting things! ARGH!
